What's the upside to the organization here?

They get on good terms with a good prospect who has the option of playing a few more years in college and then leaving?

This is likely the case...sign now and you get some money.

Yeah, the talk seems to be that he would have returned to college for at least another season if this didn't happen now.

Although a part of me wants to believe that the Sabres just didn't know about that little provision. I mean it seems completely unreasonable to think that but the Flames did sign Ryan O'Reilly to an offer sheet without realizing that he would have had to pass through waivers if the Avs didn't match it so anything's possible.

This looks like a compliment to the Sabres organization but the Sabres are on pace to finish with less points than that Leafs team despite having "way more pieces", so sick burn Babs.

Babcock doing all he can to try and de-motivate the Sabres by pumping up their tires.  "Damn, Babcock knows how good we are, we can kick these Leafs asses".  By contrast he's also trying to wake the Leafs up from the inevitable slumber they'll be in tonight for not taking the opposition seriously.

That being said, Leafs should beat these slugs badly.  Set a new record for wins on the season, extend the home winning streak to 14...let's keep this train rolling.

We might have the same parts.

So burn Yr1 of the ELC and he skips out on the rest of college so he can bolster their 2nd/3rd line next year?

I had high hopes for the Sabres-Leafs rivalry; while I'm a big fan of schadenfreude, it was pretty disappointing to see them stumble so hard coming out of their Eichel pick.

I wonder if the standings are any different today if Babcock had signed with the Sabres in 2015 instead of the Leafs?

While I'd never doubt their ability to screw things up you may not have to wait too long. They have some very good prospects in addition to whatever they may get out of this year's draft.

Well, for starters, we'd have Guy Boucher behind the bench which would be an interesting development. Would Lou come this way without Babcock on the bench? would that be a plus or a minus?

Their Cap situation is good going into next season with maybe two heavy, but no insurmountable anchors (Okposo, Bogosian). They've got at least 7 picks in each of the next three drafts.

They certainly have a good centre spine to build around (Eichel, O'Reilly, Mittlestadt/Reinhart). Linus Ullmark looks fun, if they bring him up right. It's a bit thin beyond that, especially on the backend.

There's no question that they're going to need to work on the blueline but there's also their 2016 draft that I was a big fan of(especially their top 3 picks)

It's still early but the other Nylander is sorta looking like a botched pick. It's a little weird that they went forward there when there was so many good defencemen available (Sergachev went right after).

Hasn't he been mostly injured? (Early-September, lower body) He looked decent at times at the World Juniors, but I can imagine that a lower body injury right at the beginning of the year means your conditioning suffers.

I wonder if maybe they made a poor choice for his development pulling him out of junior to play in the AHL as early as they did. His AHL production has been okay, but, in hindsight, another full season in junior would probably have been better for him.

I think this is true. And again, a part of me wonders if the Sabres basically thought "well, if Willie could do it then so can Alex".

Basically, I think the Sabres are run by idiots.

Isn't the Sabres a singular team and company, so you should say "is" run by idiots?

No. The Sabres are a team. A collective plural noun.

Well, there you go.  I'm wrong for the first time this year...at least I got that out of the way.

I didn't realize it was New Year's for your people! Happy New Year!

I didn't realize that Sergachev was the same year and Buffalo passed on him.  Oof.

Leafs go 5-2 in their remaining games they can hit 50 wins. 7 shootout wins this
year so far. They'll definitely top 100 pts for sure. Fear the ATLANTIC POWERS.
Sounds like a wwf tagteam from the 80's.
