Seattle Expansion Draft

Not sure if this is paywalled or not, but The Athletic has a handy pick tracker up and running:

This feels like that NBA draft from a few years ago where Woj leaked the picks 2 minutes before the picks were made. Who thinks that's good content? Why would Sportsnet ruin the drama of something they're airing?

It was pretty foolish of them to think these were staying under wraps. Especially with 10 hours between the lists being submitted and the show. Even if Sportsnet asked their guys not to fish for leaks people like Seravelli/Dreger/LeBrun would have been.

I guess but I'm equally puzzled as to why anyone would leak this. You have to figure it's only going to be known by a handful of NHL and Seattle Execs and they should want tonight to be good TV too.

FWIW, I don't tune in to these shows for the thrill of the reveal. I'm hoping to hear analysis and opinion on the selections.

How about let Seattle make the picks live and allow trades right up to the pick? What's the harm in that?

I suppose I'm thinking less about the people who post here and more about a casual Seattle sports fan who'll probably get an ESPN notification in an hour or two with the list of who's being picked.

Players and agents may have already been informed.

Likewise, if I'm the NHL I probably wouldn't have done that prior to the announcement of the selections.

Capfriendly on the leak ball.

Their forwards really don't pop as much as I thought they might have with some of those bigger names available that they passed on. Granted they all had risk attached to them but not having any potential high scoring forwards is a risk as well.

Yeah. They're going to a tough team to breakthrough against, but they don't look like they'll be super threatening.

After the playoffs we just watched would you invest heavily in scoring forwards? A couple of mid-tier UFA signings and they should have enough guys to try and grind out a series win or two.

Francis and Hakstol style hockey

Seattle's strategy here is interesting. Taking a lot of cheap contracts and depth pieces. I wonder if they feel they'll be able to pluck some more significant pieces in the UFA market, as they'll have a ton of space to use.

Or to use that flexibility to broker more assets into their pipeline (protected/draft exempt/picks) they would otherwise not have access to, as other teams deal with internal budget or cap constraints.

I know there are cap complications and other considerations, blah, blah, but protecting Matt Martin over Jordan Eberle.
