As far as I understand NHL players ARE allowed to wager on other sports.

"Players are allowed to wager on other sporting events and it?s not unusual for a team to have weekly NFL pools in the room."

I agree that something must be done.  My kids watch the Leaf games with me, and they have commented on the number of betting ads that come up during the game.  On the radio yesterday though they were saying that the leagues are probably going to push for more betting avenues because it increases fan involvement with the game.  I don't know if that is necessarily a good thing for society.  Things that are tied to making more money rarely are good for society though.

Ontario is at least making a move in the right direction banning the use of athletes in advertising for online betting. So I guess now we'll just get Jamie Foxx commercials? Or the guy asking what Americans know about hockey?

There?s a lot we don?t know yet, but the league clearly was concerned with what it found. The NHLPA agreeing to and negotiating this kind of harsh suspension is a tell that no one liked what was discovered in the league?s investigation.

Pinto was apologetic and accepting of the suspension, so it must have been really serious for him to not even push back even the slightest on it.
 
It is a weird suspension length. On the one hand you'd think "Well, 41 games is a lot so it has to be serious" but on the other it's like "Well, betting on hockey would be a lot more serious so what could it be that is half a season's worth of serious?"

Maybe the NHL's statement is revealing in it's specificity. He may not have bet on NHL games but player props? A fantasy hockey league?

Either way, there's no way around the fact that it's not a great look for leagues when they're stuffing as much gambling money into their pockets as humanly possible while also telling us how bad it is if their players make wagers.
 
Is anyone running bets on what Pinto was (proxy) gambling on?

Something extremely bad and embarrassing to the League, but not enough to bar him from the game entirely, and where this 41 game consequence is preferrable to the information being discussed publicly?

It really all comes down to what he did. If there were more details we could properly form what we think about this. Currently there's not much to go on but I did hear he potentially bet on a team while on that specific team's premises. Whether they should even have that rule is up for debate, but if that's the rule and he broke the rule then so be it. He can gamble, but not in a way that could obviously appear as insider knowledge.
 
And now there is confirmation that the Sens will be dinged for botching the Dadonov no trade list that got screwed up. The rumour I saw from a Sens Twitter guy was they might be losing a 1st rd pick.
