Shot Fired on Parliament Hill

The civil libertarians whom will fight every blade of grass to keep us from infringments of our personal freedoms are swimming in a pool that is no longer filled with the water we inherited from the Great generation that fought WW2.

For the love of cheese, it's who, not whom.

Do those in this thread that advocate taking away personal freedoms in the name of security realize that this is exactly the response that the terrorists want?

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that if every baby born had a DNA sample put in a Cray Computer database, that when a crime of some sort was committed that the fluid samples, whatever form they take could be run against the database, then we could solve rapes, murders and other crimes next to immediately.
However the civil libertarians will not allow that, citing Big Brother scenarios.  Well you can take DNA samples from my whole family as we won't be commiting any crimes of that sort.  I am not that worried about big government using my DNA against me.

What 2BadKnees doesnt realize is that the freedoms we once knew are already being eroded, take air travel (which I do often) which has changed from walking onto an airplane to being next to strip searched every time.  And in the name of fairness there is no racial profiling going on at all. Even 80 year old ladies with walkers and 6 year old kids are all treated the same.  So  because of radical islam we have already had some of our liberties taken away.

When we imagine our civil liberties eroding because of radical islam we are imagining the big brother scenario. There has been some excellent reporting this weekend in the Globe with many insights and opinions on the Lone Wolf scenario we are now facing.  It seems that the chatter provided by larger groups of people are easier to spot and break up in advance.  The Lone Wolf people are very disenfranchised, most are people suffering from some sort of mental illness, for as the reporters say "Normal people are not attracted to radical islam".
So we have mentally ill people whom are able to go on line and receive messages telling them they can act out any violent impulses under the name of radical islam. Wow, this is really convenient to be able to justify the hostile parts of our nature, where the barriers of the norm are worn down by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
In the US they have used sting operations against the suspected Lone Wolf's enticing them into  the action and then controling the action.  In Germany and Denmark they are investing heavy dollars into rehabilitation of those returning home sickened by the actual atrocities and barbarian acts witnessed. Perhaps we should do the same here. Perhaps a blend of the US and German/Danish models would work.

We already have the ability to charge people without a crime being actually committed.  It's a conspiracy charge and it sounds like it might have been possible in the Que killing but not for the Ottawa shooter.  The standard for charging someone found to be planning such an attack should be extremely  high but in my opinion should exist.

I've been downtown and have walked past the War Memorial several times since the incident and I'm happy to say normalcy has resumed - if there are extra security personal there (and I'm sure there are) they are plain clothed and blending in. No metal detectors. No fear mongering. No pat downs. Life goes on.
