I would think it's for a mill tops but who knows? Hopefully he can get back to pre-wrist injury because he was good then. Missing more then a month really hurt him.

I'd have probably walked away to get faster and younger in the bottom-6. I think Simmonds could be a good addition to any 4th line but the problem is we already have Spezza taking up a spot there. That puts us at a pretty big speed disadvantage. Hopefully it at least comes in at under $1mil.

He was okay... good in the room and fun and I like the dude... but I also really want to see which prospects can make the jump to a full time workload, so if this signing comes with the caveat that he might sit once in awhile for load management and asset assessment (Robertson, Anderson, etc.), yay. If he's plugging up a spot permanently and turning the PP into a 3 on 4, then I'm inclined to pass.

Okay....

I mean, maybe with 4th line minutes and 2nd unit PP net-front duties, it might work. Any more responsibilities than that, and it's not good.

I'd prefer to see some new blood/that spot being kept open for internal competition, but, whatever.

Personally, If Hyman leaves I like Simmonds in front of the net on PP1.

(Even if Hyman doesn't leave, I prolly still like Wayne in front of the net on PP1)

I have to think that relatively implicit in signing any of these guys to league minimum or near minimum deals is that they won't block a talented young player if that young player really earns their spot.

I mean we don't have a lot of young guys ready to fill out roles in the bottom 6 so I'm not going to object to it if he comes back at league minimum.    that being said, Simmonds was a complete non-factor after coming back from a broken hand.  Is Wayne Simmonds the guy who put up 5 goals in 6 game (Jan 24 - Feb 6) or is he the guy who put up 2G 3A in 39 other regular season and playoff games.

I'm just not super keen on him being back but it better be for 750K.

I think he's more of the 1st guy. He just wasn't the same player when he got back. Some players can't miss 5 weeks and get it back. I do like him though and think he could be very good for the team in a limited role. I also think he feeds of the crowd so having fans next season should also help his game.

I supported getting Wayne but LK is right, except for G2 he was a non-presence in the playoffs and obviously is not capable of playing at a tempo that will help Vintage.  And if they bring him back he'd better be getting 4th-line and maybe PP2 minutes.  Too much mileage, too much damage.

How do you really judge a guy off of a 6 game stretch in the middle of 12 games where he was poor for the first 4-5 and ok for the next few before getting on a hot streak of goals.  that was such an aberration from his play the majority of the season I'm not willing to buy that it wasn't more of a mirage.  I'll give him the few weeks it takes to get back in gear but he had two whole months to get back into playoff gear.  There wasn't anything about his game that suggested elevated play against Montreal.

And honestly that's part of why we're going to be caught between a rock and a hard place if we don't start recouping assets. More aimed at the top 6 but we could have younger players earn their stripes and punch above their weight class if they were better cost controlled.

I suspect he's somewhere in between. The wrist injury almost certainly threw off his rhythm/timing, and without much time between games, it would have been harder to get that back in a way players are accustomed to. He's definitely not the guy who scored 5 goals in 6, but he should be able to be better than the guy who was practically invisible after his injury. He's not going to be a big offensive contributor, but I think he can be the type of guy who can add 10-15 goals while getting 4th line minutes and 2nd unit PP duties. Is that worth bringing him back over adding some new blood who can probably produce at a similar rate? I don't know, but it's not the craziest idea.

Confirmed now.

At $900k there isn't much to complain about here. I just hope we have some other plan in the works to change up the bottom-6 a little.

Shrug.  I'm not upset with it.  900K isn't enough to complain about.  Two years seems kind of unnecessary but that's not a huge problem if he has an awful year to bury.

So far Spezza + Simmonds come in 550K cheaper than last year.

Like the signing last year but after watching him in the playoffs I would have let him walk. Him and Thornton should have been let go. Wouldn?t be surprised if Joe resigns. You think our brain trust would have seen enough.
