Simmonds signed to a 2-year extension @ 900k AAV

He became redundant and useless as the season progressed.  The money is nothing to fret too much over.  But the second year seems totally unnecessary at this point.

Might be a concession from the Leafs side to get him <1M. Fully buriable, but also fully paid in the AHL, which is also local for Simmonds' family considerations.

Right there. That's guaranteed money. There may be no intention to play after next year. This also allows the Leafs to trade/protect Kerfoot and Engvall so it is significant. There's not much chance Francis is taking Spezza or Simmonds. I think they already know who Seattle is taking. Part of the Hakstol move.
I don't mind the signing at all. I think the injury really hurt him and let's be honest here, he's a 4th line guy so guys like Robertson aren't losing ice time because of him.

My only minor issue is Simmonds is the type of specialist that we can't really build a useful line out of, at least not with our current signed player depth. Maybe he works out well with Brooks, who had a great AHL run with Marchment, another lanky janky skating bruiser, on his wing in a 4th line defensive role.

So far that's 10.55M left to sign 1 goaltender, 1-2 defensemen, 2-3 forwards if we didn't lose anyone off the roster (including the expansion draft)

Fail.

Dubas seems to be unable to distinguish between vets who can play (Spezza) and those who are washed up or all but.

And again, I like Wayne.  But just re-run the tape of him in the playoffs.  One game only, he added value.  The rest?  Invisible.

Weren't there some hypothetical grumblings that Corey Perry was the alternative plan to Simmonds for the Leafs in the offseason.  Maybe I'm misremembering that but it would have been an interesting decision.  Also Tavares wouldn't have been injured in that alternative reality.

The rumour was Perry was the backup target if Simmonds signed elsewhere (specifically, Montreal, IIRC). Might have been the better move. Perry was a much stronger contributor.

A deal like this makes Simmons an option. Nothing more, nothing less. The second year will have absolutely no bearing on the club so fretting about it is a real sign of amateur GM brain. Maybe he rebounds and comes into camp raring to go and has a good year, maybe they bury him.

If you guys know any better options available for the minimum...the Leafs can still sign them.

Well dubas is doubling down on we can win with group, i thought last season Simmonds was risky but he had a lot of time to heal so maybe. He couldn?t even make it though a 56 game schedule and when he came back I don?t know what keefe seen in him to keep him in the line up because what he was brought in for he didn?t do at all. Would have rathered had petan or someone with a little more speed out there.

Wayne Simmonds said #Leafs "may have sat back too much" in playoffs and that's something they need to work on:

"It was our killer instinct. We have to [go in for] the kill when we smell blood in the water."

Ya think?

He broke his wrist blocking a shot. That's not a wear and tear injury related to age or stamina.

Wasn't even trying to block it. It was a clearing attempt from a teammate behind him. Freak accident.

I rewatched, it was a clearing attempt block on the forecheck.
