Stars vs. Maple Leafs - Dec. 18th, 7:30pm - SN, TSN 1050

Ok I'm pretty sure Dallas was getting credit for shots that were getting blocked

The shot total lies about the solid job the Leafs did in the 3rd

herman I know you disagreed with me earlier but looking at the goal replays just now I think both the Robertson and McMann goals were baddies for Oettinger.

I think Dallas played better in the 1st. Some of the shots were built up by the imbalance on penalties.
Dallas also racked up shots on the 6-on-5 attempts in the 3rd (which Dallas did pretty well with)

Dallas is a good team. To beat them at home is a very credible result even though the Leafs displayed a few warts in their own game (some brought out by Dallas).

Obviously, a great showing by the 3rd line.
McMann-Robertson-Domi are 2nd-3rd-4th on the team behind Marner in takeaways/60

Snippets of data:
McMann tied Tanev for the team lead in +/- with +11
McMann took the team lead in 5 on 5 goals per 60 and is 19th in the NHL in that stat.

With Domi & Robertson waking up, we have reason to hope the third line could work.

Kampf seemed like Kampf - I could not conclude much from his play - he won way more faceoffs than he lost.
I thought Nylander-Matthews-Marner line was off - not sharp.
I didn't mind Matthews & Marner on the PK.
I thought Knies did ok on the PK. Knies-Tavares-Pacioretty line was hit and miss.

Something seemed to be going on with the D pairings after the 1st
Benoit & McCabe spent some shifts together as did OEL & Tanev
Rielly wound up with 18 mins which is low for him.

I thought Woll was great - Berube described him as their best player. No softies.

While Oettinger probably wanted those two back and didn’t have a great night, I lean towards crediting the shooter. The Leafs turned the puck back to offense really quickly and placed excellent, deceptive quick shots on net at places that are not covered by default: five hole, low-glove. Jake looked like he didn’t see where either were going and any hesitation against NHL shooters will make any goalie look lost.
