Stone traded to Vegas, signs 8x9.5mil extension

https://twitter.com/PierreVLeBrun/status/1100123721170337793

So there's an extension done right away too. Anyone who followed my posts in his draft year knows how much I like Brannstrom, but this makes not getting a 1st look even worse.

For a player like Stone (who is probably a top 10-15 winger in the league) getting a top prospect and 1st should have been the goal.

Vegas isn't letting go of any of their free top 6 draft picks. They automatically get placed in 3rd last place for the lottery as part of the expansion agreement (for 3 years, I think).

I'm pretty sure that's not true. They didn't have a top pick in this past draft.

That pick was traded to Detroit for Tatar, wasn't it? So they should be down to their last one this upcoming draft. 6th is the lowest they could possibly pick because they're gifted the same odds as the 3rd worst finish to the regular season.

That pick was 30th overall. They are not guaranteed top picks. They are not gifted anything.

You're right (it's hard to find the rules after the fact), it only applied to their first draft (2017).

Melnyk couldn't shell 9M for the guy that actually loved playing for Ottawa and would've been the shoo-in captain?

*whispers* talk of Marner getting $10+mil is insane *whispers*

Apparently they did offer him similar money (maybe structure is different).  It sounds like none of these guys believed in the org. and didn't want to commit long term.  Which is probably worse than the owner being too cheap to sign them.

As much as I'd like to agree that its "insane"

1.  Would you rather pay Stone/Kucherov 9.5M in years 6-8 when they are age 31+  or Marner 10.5M in years 6-8 when he is age 27-29?  And its not like Marner's age 22-26 seasons should be any worse than what he's doing now (puck luck or injury aside).  There is a very real chance that both Stone and Kucherov are having their career years the season before they start a slow decline while starting their big contracts.  I'd be really surprised if Marner didn't continue to improve moving forward.

2.  The days of RFA superstars getting squeezed is coming to an end.  I think middle-tier RFA's will get squeezed pretty hard still moving forward (ie Johnsson/Kapanen) but you won't see it with elite players.

3.  I think smart GM's will start paying players for what they can reasonably expect in terms of production etc instead of "you did this for n years in your prime, so I'm going to pay you like you are going to continue doing it until you are 35".

Anyways, I certainly HOPE the Leafs use these two examples as to reasons why he shouldn't get a lick above 9M per but I don't think its *insane* to get it.

His inclusion wasn't reported originally but Tobias Lindberg also went from Ottawa to Vegas in the deal. Not the first time the 23-year old forward has been traded:

Feb 2016: Traded from Ottawa to Toronto in the Phaneuf trade
Oct 2017: Traded from Toronto to Vegas for Calvin Pickard
Feb 2018: Traded from Vegas to Pittsburgh as part of the Brassard 3-way trade
Dec 2018: Traded from Pittsburgh back to Ottawa in a depth swap
Feb 2019: Traded from Ottawa back to Vegas in the Stone trade

Hasn't played in the NHL since he got in a few games with the Leafs in the tank-year. His AHL numbers aren't anything special either.

VGK Ops: Here's the fresh shipment of Oscar's sweaters!

McPhee: Oh shhh--ugar plum fairies... hey Dorion, can you throw in Tobias?
