That's Our Lou!

I don't think Lou gets a whole lot of say in who the media decides is the face of the franchise.

He certainly doesn't, but it's not a bad idea to avoid saying something that the media can latch on to in any way in making that claim about Matthews.  It'll be very interesting to see how much a player that ultimately and almost certainly will be the face of the franchise will also be sheltered from the media in the coming years by Lou and Babcock.

The Leafs do have control of their OWN marketing and website though I'm pretty sure.

I also think the networks that air Leafs games also own the Leafs...  Don't think they answer to Lou's lip service though.

Lou talked about it yesterday.

All of the rookies will be sheltered from the media.

Oh, no doubt.  I'm just talking about the balance between media-sheltering and team/player/product/brand promotion over the many coming years of Matthews' (and to a lesser extent Marner's and Nylander's) career.

Minor poll here:  Lou's comments aside, if you're given a free Leafs jersey tomorrow with name lettering and number, whose name do you put on the jersey?  I'm kind of torn between Marner and Matthews.

I'd go with Matthews.

There's probably some truth to that(although I think in general players don't really need that sort of sheltering) but there's still a way to do that without engaging in this kind of dopey old-schoolism. You could just say "Face of the Franchise isn't a thing and, to the extent it its, it's not something we decide. We're just trying to build the best team possible and we'll leave the honorifics up to you guys".

I'd want to get Nylander too but we still don't really know which number he's going to use long-term. Is he sticking with 39 or switching to something he actually gets to pick?
