The 2013-2014 Toronto Raptors thread: A 'Drake' New World

Raptors draft Bruno Caboclo with the 20th overall pick.  A SF from Brazil.  Hmm.
6'9" 220 pound SF.  He's extremely raw.  Extremely.

I mean...I know it's only one site but he isn't even listed at nbadraft.net and they list their top 100 prospects.

http://www.nbadraft.net/players/bruno-caboclo - Rated overall as "0" because there is nothing

His stat line from Pinheiros (found on Wikipedia Brazil edition)
GP    MIN  FG%  3PT% FT% RPG  APG  BPG  Turnover  PPG
2013-14 Pinheiros 17 13.2 .491 .304 .733 3.1 .2 .4 .9 4.8

Masai is going to have to justify this in a big way.  Pretty sure the Raptors would have been able to grab him with their 2nd 2nd rounder let alone the 39th.

I mean...he was described as being two years away from being two years away. This was a playoff team.

Is it possible that despite the strong finish to the season that Masai still plans on rebuilding completely? I mean, everyone thought they were going to take the wrecking ball to the team after the Gay trade...that's really the only way I see this making sense.

I will say from a pure physical attribute standpoint he seems appealing.  He has a 7'6"-7'7" wingspan.

I really don't know enough about basketball to have much of an opinion on the pick.  But, for discussion, some guy on Twitter said: "if he's as good as they think it's better to draft him in the 1st rnd because he would be a restricted FA after his rook deal".  I'm just curious if there's anything to that thinking at all or not.  Anybody?

Well, I mean, if he's as good as they think he is then picking him where they did makes sense on that basis alone but, and correct me if I'm wrong, if the argument here is that they could have had him at #37 but that him not being a UFA after a rookie deal is more valuable than the #20 pick itself then I'd have serious doubts about that even if the #20 pick was the safest pick of all time.

DeAndre Daniels from UConn at #37. I'm going to take it as a win that the guys calling the draft didn't then spend the next 5 minutes making fun of the pick.

Ujiri made three trips to Brazil to see him in person and last week brought Dwane Casey to Houston to seem him also.

?A stealth move,? Casey called it.

?Bruno is an athletic phenomenon,? Casey said. ?At No. 20 you?re not going to get a perfect player, but this young man has a chance to hit it big. He?s raw. But he?s going to be a guy that is going to develop in our program, grow and do a lot of things for us. Defensively, he?s long. He covers a lot of ground down in a stance. He blocks shots with his length.?

Once Ennis was gone, who else was he going to take?? said
one source close to the Raptors executive.

Keep collecting those Brazilians I guess.

He's tall and skinny so not just Brazilians but lanky ones.  Not a terrible move.  Some PG insurance with Williams although he had a rough go after injury last year and Bebe is likely a few years away from doing anything meaningful if at all.  Can't really turn your nose at that.  He's another guy with a huge wingspan (7'6").  Can't shoot the ball or dribble to save his life but has good hands around the basket.  He is supposed to be a really good shot blocker too.

His frame leads to him getting pushed around in Spain so not great for the NBA and rebounding.

Williams only has one more year on his deal so it isn't like it is holding the Raptors back all that much.

I've got no problem with it from an asset accumulation standpoint and although I obviously would have preferred it if the Memphis scenario happened, turning the asset of Salmons' contract into last year's #16 pick is fine.

That said, Salmons was one of the only real options the Raps had in terms of guarding bigger wings. So at some point they'll need to add that if the idea is to stay competitive next year.

Well, in the latest bizarre development in what has been by far the craziest NBA off-season I can remember the Nets have traded Jason Kidd to the Bucks for two second round picks after Kidd apparently attempted and failed some front office coup.

Michael Grange is reporting that Lowry and the Raptors have agreed to terms.

Edit: Actually, I listened to the report that others tweeted about, he called it a prediction and would be shocked if Lowry didn't return, based on conversations with people around the league and with the Raptors organization.
