THE 2016 NHL DRAFT-DAY THREAD

I don't see JVR moving until the Stamkos situation is sorted one way or another.  I think he stays, regardless though.

I just don't see him moving at all, it would need to be a very sweet offer. He is what most teams want in a winger, us included. So to move him would be a step back.

If JVR doesn't move today, do people still think that he will be moved at some point this summer, or does he stay around with the Leafs for the next year?

That depends on the kind of return they're looking for. I wouldn't say the deadline is the draft. I'm thinking more mid-July. If he's not moved by the time free agency really winds down, he's probably a Leaf until at least the trade deadline.

That makes sense to me, JVR back playing and healthy, if he puts up great numbers on a more offensive Leafs team his value will be at an all time high by trade deadline.  Given his age, production, and contract, he would be attractive to a team looking for a playoff push.

I think JVR's value is already pretty firmly established. The team that acquires him can probably expect a 30-goal, 60-point player who rarely gets injured. I don't think he's going to surprise anyone at this point.

What would be a step back is having JVR signed to a six or 7-year deal for 7.5 million AAV at 29 years old.

Look at it this way: JVR is here on an amazingly palatable salary and cap hit for the next two seasons. Toronto realistically isn't going to start contending (or try to start) for at least 3 years. So it makes sense to move an attractive commodity at its highest value.

When the Leafs are ready to contend and JVR is nearing 30 and looking for 7x6, that suddenly doesn't look so palatable.

There's a palpable sense of giddiness in Leafs nation today.  I can't remember another day in recent times where Leafs fans are so excited.  Every Leafs fan I've seen or talked to today has a spring in his step and a bulge in his pants.

You probably know by now that I disagree with that.  Especially the "try to start" part.

The last thing I remember Lou saying in regards to JVR was that he wasn't going anywhere.

Contending and competing are two very different things. I imagine this team will be competitive starting this upcoming season. If you think they are a contender this year; however, well, good luck to you sir and happy watching. I think you might be a tad disappointed. ;)

Ahhh, gotcha.  I think they are two seasons away from CONTENDING.  51 years is long enough.

Without wanting to import what's a for-now dead subject, there are people who are seemingly both pro-keeping JVR and pro-signing Stamkos and the reality is that the Leafs can't possibly do both. The salary cap projection that some of the pro-Stamkos people relied on as "proof" that the Leafs had room for Stamkos absolutely didn't have them re-signing JVR.

Imagine another 51 years if they don't do this right, 2 years, good grief.
