The Official 2011/2012 Armchair GM thread

I brought Kipper up in another thread. In my opinion he and Luongo need to be Burke's #1 targets this summer. I'd have no problem with him paying a high price to acquire either. This team needs an elite goaltender. I know there's issues elsewhere on the roster, but I feel as though that's the one thing that's been keeping us out of the playoffs.

My issue with Kipper is similar to Luongo - acquisition cost. He's not a long term add (he's got maybe 3 seasons left, I'd say), so that has to be taken into account when looking at how much the team should be willing to part with to pick him up.

Just went on a Flames board and some Flames fan actually presented this:

to Leafs:
- Miikka Kiprusoff
to Flames:
- Luke Schenn
- Tim Connolly

That's not terrible.  Some other fan actually said (paraphrashing) 'Leafs wouldn't do it because Kipper is aging and Burke really values Schenn'.

So maybeeee something like Connolly, Franson (instead of Schenn), plus (i.e. D'Amigo? Colborne?  2nd or 3rd next season?  instead?)

I honestly don't think that is a high price to pay at all.  Gives the Leafs a Kipper-Reimer duo for the next 2+ years.  Finally some stability in goal.. and ditching Connolly would be great also!

If we're dealing with Calgary I'd try to use Reimer as bait too and go with Kipper/Scrivens next season.

Schenn is a lot to give up for a goalie, I know it'll cost, still, and Connolly has a modified ntc, can't find any details.

Franson, Connolly ( if.. ), Reimer for Kip and a 2nd? I dunno, it's always wacky trying to figure these things out. If it's Schenn instead of Franson I definitely want a pick coming back.

I'm not all that interested in dealing a bunch of youth for a goalie with only two years left before unrestricted fee agency. I like Schenn for 4 years better than Kipper for 2 - Just me.

Why are we giving up half-decent assets for a guy who won't be in the league for more than three years? I mean, nobody seems to like Connolly but he's isn't as useless as people make him seem imo. He was pretty much the only bright spot on our PK.

A top-10 goalie would be a nice bright spot for our PK to have.

I'm honestly not that high on Reimer and Franson is still kind of questionable to me too though I'd rather keep him. I was just trying to see the possibilities rather than endorsing it.

I'd go with louisstamos 'Luongo for a second' in a heartbeat but I don't think it's going to be that easy and Burke is going to be looking.

As much as I defended Connolly this year, I wouldn't miss him that much so  :-\

The Leafs should invest in some real bottom six players to cover the pk anyways, the Guastad's, Prust's, McClement's, Moen's etc.. I don't know if any of them will be available but that would suit me.

Re. Connolly... Close to 5 mil. for a 3rd liner who was just okay on the PK. A 3rd liner who by the way didn't show enough to earn any meaningful time on the 2nd line which Burke himself identified as a major disappointment at his end of year presser. Yeah, who wouldn't be thrilled about Connolly.  :P

The thing with Connolly (for me) is he on his own probably represents much of why being a Leaf is often difficult.

Yeah but he could be declining and with two years left on his deal, I'm not interested at the price suggested on the Flames board.

This was one of his better seasons statistically in the past few years, so there isn't really much evidence to suggest he's on the decline. I would also guess he wouldn't be playing 70 games a season as a Leaf. As for the price, yeah I wouldn't give up Schenn here. But guys like Reimer, Franson, Colborne, and Ashton would all be available to talk about.

Sarge, if Connolly had played regularly with goal scorers I think he probably would have been perceived a little differently, there's only so much he can do playing a lot with Lombardi and Crabb. I mean, even so, he wasn't that far off his production and games played from the year before.

Are we really suggesting to keep Connolly instead of including him in a deal for a good goalie?

I'm at a loss here.  I'll see you guys in June.

Vokoun went for this 5 years ago:

2007 second round pick
2008 first round pick
2007 or 2008 conditional second round pick

I'd say for Kipper, we are in this range.
