The Official 2011/2012 Armchair GM thread

Rats, Juraj Mikus signed in the KHL.  That basically throws the monkey wrench in my realistic lineup for next October.  >:(  I mean I wonder who else won't be able to be gotten by Burke?

My frustration usually comes out in foolishness.

In all seriousness though, I am not very hopeful anymore that Burke will be able to do anything significant to help the Leafs.

So, what is our defense looking like now?

Carl Gunnarsson / Dion Phaneuf
John-Michael Liles / Holzer
Jake Gardiner / Shultz ;-) ?
Komisarek

... I think it has been clear for a while that short of an unanticipated trade for a first line center, there is not a lot he can do.  I anticipate a little more shuffling of players in and out though ...

So my pipe dream is going like this, Schultz, Ryan, free Komisarek buyout, Holzer/Fraser promotion, Thomas retracts his year off statement.

You forgot to include finding a first line centre with size.  Other than that, I am with you.

I see one, maybe two of those things happening.

Yeah, I'd probably be happy just with Schultz but my pipe says otherwise...

...and yeah, a centre too but even my pipe has limits... ;)

I've read that if the Kings can get Quick locked up that Bernier could be on the market...Give something with similar value to Lindback. Something like Mac and a pick or Franson and a pick (I think Franson is possible...could upgrade on Martinez the other guy...Diereski or something).

It's not an "established #1", but Bernier is a pretty high end prospect no?

Heck...Franson + Scrivens for Bernier or something...I dunno.

Bernier's stats aren't any better than Reimer's, so, other than the hype, I'm not sure how much really separates the two.

I was going to say that I don't really have all that much of a reason to believe that Bernier is better than Scrivens either ...

I was hooked on Big Blue long before Heisenberg showed up... ;)

I am a bit concerned about Statsny being mentioned as a possible 1st line center. He seems to have dropped off and yes I know that stats don't tell the whole story but comparing him to Bozak, Statsny is not that much of an improvement.

I got Game center on NHL this spring and was watching Colorado.  To me, Statsny was their 3rd best center.  To pay $6.6 MIL instead of $1.5 MIL seems a bit reckless with cap space on what could almost be considered a reclamation project.

On paper:
?85 Statsny 6-0 205 L  $6.6 13/14
79  21  32  53  -8  34

?86 Bozak 6-1 190  R  $1.5  12/13
73  18  29  47  -7  22

Maybe Burke should get in on the brother theme this week and call up St. Louis and trade an excess blueliner for Max Gardiner. He's a big 6'3" center. He probably won't be a #1 center, but playing with Jake might bring out the best in him...

To assess what is going on there, I'd like to know a little bit more about who Statsny's linemates were and how he was used relative to their other centers.
