Bender, do you know how to play a major scale? That's the 'Ionian' mode of the 7 modes, it's easy to figure without notation, start on any note and play from there... tone tone semitone tone tone tone semitone. ( a tone being two frets a semitone being one fret )

Try that on one string going up and down then try finding those notes across the strings using two to three notes per string. Start with one octave to keep it simple. After that the rest of the modes will start to make a lot more sense, fwiw.

I know major/minor penta and major scale. I'll be looking to put the others together. I'm thinking just going through youtube videos. I'm a visual learner.

If you are familiar with the major scale though unfamiliar with notation I can give you a very easy way to think of it from your pov, visually ( patterns... ) however the best way to really get it all to sink in is to incorporate all of hearing, seeing and doing when you practice, even if your understanding seems most benefited from your visual cues.

I'll put something together and pm you, it should be somewhat helpful.

Sounds good man! Thanks for the help :)

Man, I've really got GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) right now. Well, not so much a guitar but an amp. I was looking at Hughes and Kettner Statesman but poking around the website it looks like they have a jack of all trades amp in the Switchblade 100 2x12.

My Peavey Classic 50 is in for servicing and I've had enough of it (its been a nuisance for three years). I really would love it... but I think I'll have to choose between a computer and an amp... and I think computer wins out right now :(

MUST BUY!!!

So I just picked up Rocksmith and wow, what a great idea. For 80$ it, at the very least, can work as a decent amplifier. It certainly made it easier for me to break out the old guitar; having to lug out the amp, the patch cords and the distortion/tuning pedal really can be a pain in the butt.

Hey I'm not Daniel Alfredsson, you're not a Leaf fan and this isn't a home game in Ottawa ;)

At least I can handle "lugging" out a couple of stomp boxes and patch chords that weigh 6 kgs combined  :)

I was really "amped" when I first got this game, but the song selection has ALOT to be desired. Rather disappointing.

That certainly does seem to be a little lacking. You can download additional songs for 2.99$ but it would be nice if they gave a little more selection for a little less $.

Bender how are the chops coming along?

I'd love to find the time to practice more, but my life is a bit too hectic right now to really take it to another level, but I do have a bunch of songs I'm working on right now. It's just trying to find that balance.

Writing songs is never bad practice. What kind of keys do you like to write in or is it just whatever falls out of the guitar?

Usually in the Key of C but not always. Sometimes I try to mix it up, and sometimes stuff just falls out, but C is usually the key.

Interesting - you a piano player too?

C is a great key for this little exercise I'm going to show you - can you put the chords of a tune of yours up too?

Sure, if memory serves me correctly

C - F- G
C- F - G - F

Am - G - Am - G
C - G - E - G - G7

Something like that.

I've dabbled in it for fun, but not with any theory. Just watch some Youtube vids and see if I can follow :)
