The trade deadline and the ostensibly perplexing Phaneuf issue

Jonathan Willis ‏@JonathanWillis

Dion Phaneuf in 2015-16:
w/ Jake Gardiner: 50% GF, 53.2% Corsi
w/ anyone else: 28.6% GF, 47.4% Corsi

If Phaneuf does bring back some sort of value Lou owes Jake a gift basket.

The reality is under the right structure Phanuef is not half as bad he is portrayed to be.  Yes under Carlyle and the other "coaches" the Captain was expected to be superman and carry  the team on his back. He looked horrid at times and just bad the rest of the time.
Now under Babs we see Phanuef playing in the right context, still making his share of bonehead plays, getting blown by faster younger skaters, perhaps way to much PP time, but overall he has been much steadier. Worth his huge fee? Of course not, but their are teams that could see value in him for their playoff push.  Perhaps we take back a bad contract or perhaps we won't have to retain to much of his pay.

Alright, excel spreadsheet time ya dorks.

Who has the cap space, playoff race need and willingness to eat the remainder of his contract?

Okay I did one and it determined that Byron Froese isn't that good.

He'd have been good under Ron Wilson according to mine.  >:(

Detroit and Dallas were two teams he's been linked to in the past year. The Wings bought out Stephen Weiss though so they don't have any long-terms they regret right now. That'll make things tough unless the Leafs eat salary.

The Stars certainly aren't afraid to make big moves. Lehtonen is on the books for 2 more seasons after this one at $5.9mil and their 1a/1b system has become more of a traditional model with Niemi getting the majority of the starts. Maybe something like Phaneuf and Reimer for Lehtonen + something? They can still have their 2-goalie system and they can try to re-sign Reimer to a more reasonable deal than Kari's.

edit: I mean, nevermind.

I don't think Phaneuf becomes a must-move until after Nylander and Marner's ELCs are up. I also think that'll be around when other teams start to feel comfortable taking the rest of his contract (assuming he can maintain a level of play similar to what we've seen this season).

Certainly the term "must-move" is a subjective one, depending on the necessity of getting rid of his contract or his mistakes (again the  idiotic pinch in the first minute of the game against Ottawa), etc.

By all accounts, he seems to be  a  classy guy, who is good to the young players.

But, really, is he going to be any better in 2 or 3 or 4 years from now?  Can the Leafs expect to get anything at all in the future for him, especially if his skating  inevitably declines because of age, talent, etc. etc.?

I suggest that it certainly is incumbent on the GM to explore options including trying to trade him now, instead of, say, focusing on seat eligibility for the team's charters, and to ensure that the employees can no longer talk to the media. :)

So are you saying that teams shouldn't be signing players of 27, 28 years old to long term contracts because performance declines are inevitable?

Yes you are correct (Mr. Noonis). :)

Are you saying TO should only keep players until they're 25 or 26 or 27 then let them walk or trade them?

I think that I am saying that TO should,

ahh,  try to ahh,

move up in the draft like when we got Schenn,  and  hmm...

there is also the internet thing to consider and...

2 first rounders for uhh...  Stempniak  and...

(Good heavens,  I was having a Cliffie Fletcher flashback moment  there).

Mr. Fletcher's position on 27 year old players, as well as mine, are fundamentally irrelevant to the Leafs direction, IMHO.  But I would suggest that it might be premised on bona fide talent, which of  Dion didn't really have over the last 6 years.  And how about that Phaneuf trade  now!!!!!    Yesss!!!
