Tim Leiweke leaving MLSE soon?

His legacy will be extending Nonis with no reason to and possibly pressuring the team into signing Clarkson.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out man.

If I remember correctly one of the reasons he left LA was because of his continuing inability to draw a NFL franchise to the city. I wonder if what is looking more and more like a failed attempt to bring the Bills to Toronto is likewise inspiring him to move on.

Still, we'll always have the fond memories of hanging a Bon Jovi banner along with those of the Maple Leafs greats, no progress on the hockey front and Drake's tampering charge to remember him by.

Well, that was quick. At least he got things moving in a hopefully positive direction by bringing in Shanahan, but, that remains to be seen.

So what happened to the Culture of Excellence or whatever it was that he was bleating about?  I guess he achieved it already.

Leiweke's response:

Tim Leiweke denies he's going anywhere: "Any report stating that I am leaving MLSE is untrue. I am proud of all that we have accomplished here over the past year, but we have much more to do.  We are completely focused on the seasons at hand and I am not thinking of anything else but that."

And from Cathal Kelly:

@cathalkelly

Just talked to Tim Leiweke re: rumours he's leaving MLSE: "It's not true. 100 per cent not true. I'm fully committed to the season at hand."

These situations are always frustrating because what else is Leiweke going to say in this situation.  It doesn't prove that he isn't moving on, but then guys like Bob McCown can spout off constantly without any actual proof being given and the rumors continue to swirl.  The Toronto media is irritating.

It's only a matter of time now.

kid_ish: bruce arthur on tsn radio is saying it isn't happening "soon" but basically this is beginning of the end of tim in tor. cc @Hope_Smoke

Apparently, his wife has already moved back to SoCal, which is fanning the flames on this a little.

I would imagine with a position as large as this "soon" could really mean next offseason. I highly doubt Leiweke would leave the Leafs at a moments notice right before the NHL/NBA seasons are about to start.

Worst thing that could happen, let Tim stay the course and take these teams to where he is steering him.  A very good friend of mine use to manage the Staple Center and said that Tim is an excellent guy and actually wants to make winners. He is super accessible and we need that in our overall leader. Say it aint so Tim.

Something about his choice of words leaves me unconvinced. He confined his assurances to the upcoming season and didn't offer much beyond that.

Contrary to rumours about his wife having moved back to CA, his wife is currently still around TO:

The Clippers who currently have Richard Parsons as interim CEO. But contrary to rumours about them:
Ex-CEO Ballmer quits Microsoft board to focus on NBA's Clippers

Does an Ex-CEO need a CEO to look after his $2 billion investment when he quits the Microsoft board to look after his $2 billion investment? I have my doubts.

Leiweke was hired by MLSE on June 30, 2013. He did an interview with Los Angeles Magazine a few months later posted in October of 2013.

Although it's open to interpretation, IMHO it seemed pretty clear to me to be a real puff piece where he used it as a platform to lay the groundwork for all things Tim including a return to Los Angeles.

I walked away from that interview convinced he was just a tourist, so it won't surprise me if he leaves "soon".

Officially, he left AEG by "mutual consent", but there were many rumours and lots of smoke that he was fired outright.

Personally, I was surprised the Toronto media didn't investigate this angle more.

9 out 10 sales of this nature that reach letter of intent stage fall through for a variety of reasons. It's the championship game 7 for businessmen but they can pull their team off the field if they don't like how the game is going.

When sales of this nature occur, it is very common for the new owner to install their own management to look after their asset. The incumbent management team has allegiances to the incumbent owner. Part of the reason for that, is there is a period after the sale, often for six months to a year, where money is held back until everything checks out. And usually, to help make the sale happen, the incumbent management is promised a hefty payout - in part, to help compensate them for the upcoming period when they may be out of their cushy job - to help them cooperate with the sale.

Knowing that, Leiweke had to be considering his next job and may have found one he preferred.

Maybe there's merit to what Forbes alleged and Leiweke was being courted to stay on by one of the prospective buyers. Maybe not. But it came at a point where Leiweke's future with Anschutz was very likely coming to an end.

DarrenDreger: Anyone at all surprised at MLSE's announcement Leiweke will remain on as boss until June 2015 or a successor is appointed?
