Tim Leiweke leaving MLSE soon?

No, just highly disappointed. Another blustery executive that overpromises and under-delivers bites the dust.

However, I do think Brendan coming in is a good step, as well as the analytics department. Even without him I think we're set up a lot better for success going forward than before.

So what is Timmy's legacy here?

A few medium named soccer players that have helped the current makeup of the team.  I believe a new GM as well...not to sure.

Hiring Drake as Global Ambassador.  If Drake can help lure Kevin Durant than yes - its a success...otherwise a big Meh and much ado about nothing.

Firing Bryan Colangelo and hiring Masai who ultimately set the franchise in the right directly by letting go of dead weight in Bargnani and Gay.

Pissed off the leafs alumni.

Leafs first playoff round (nothing to do with Tim imo).  Brand new President in Shanny. (Hired around the day the Leafs missed the playoffs - changing the conversation from another failed season and another disappointing finish)

Plus whatever his teams do this year...

Overall - a big meh with slight upside for the Raps and some moderate to good success finally for TFC.

Another in a long list of blowhards and failures to accomplish anything with the Leafs. I now believe he was an for-the-NFL hire now and when that didn't pan out he wanted out.

I think his reputation should and deserves to take a major hit here. He needs a challenge? OMFG I don't know of a bigger challenge nor reward of getting a Cup to Toronto.

I'm sure the usual MLSE dysfunction at the top does not help.

But like most, I'll swallow the current kool-aid and hope that IF they actually give Shanahan 100% control he'll do more good than harm. If not then we're back to our usual management - a new guy every few years at the top who proclaims he knows the path and then breaks his ankle attempting to walk it.

The thing is, that's not the kind of challenge he can really work towards. At most, he can hope that he hired the right guy to run the team. That's a pretty mediocre challenge for him. He's a business guy, and his challenges lie on the business side of the equation - an area where the Leafs (and MLSE as a whole) really aren't a challenge at all.

From the sounds if it dealing with a Bell vs. Rogers board may have been a challenge, but not really one Leiweke thought he was signing up for.

Something about his choice of words leaves me unconvinced. He confined his assurances to the upcoming season and didn't offer much beyond that.

You nailed it.  He committed to the season at hand ... and the minute it's over he's the hell outta here.

Actually, my apologies to Mr. Leiweke.  He's committed to June 2015.  Our season will be over in early April.  :P

Yeah - and that may be one that very few people will be up for.

Leiweke's season is effectively over now. Apparently, there was a MLSE board meeting yesterday and it resulted in today's announcement. His authority will largely be stripped and he'll just remain as a figurehead until they replace him.

Maybe they can now convince Wayne Gretzky to man the ship.  ;D

I don't think Gretzky has the kind of business acumen they'll be looking for in the next president of MLSE.

Rob Ford is the most obvious candidate. I think he's the man to reverse the trend (of increasing stadium beer prices)

Kind of surprised to read about Lieweke's possible departure from MLSE.  But then, as with all things Maple Leaf,  should anyone be surprised?

If and when he leaves, it's anyone's guess who his replacement will be.

Wouldn't doubt Lieweke taking on an executive position with an NBA club (no, not the Raptors).  Just guessing,

Yeah, president of MLSE pretty much has nothing to do with the on-ice product and everything to do with managing the name brand of the Leafs/Raptors/TFC and expanding Maple Leaf Square and its associated hotels/bars.

If I remember correctly one of the reasons he left LA was because of his continuing inability to draw a NFL franchise to the city. I wonder if what is looking more and more like a failed attempt to bring the Bills to Toronto is likewise inspiring him to move on.

That may have gone both ways - maybe part of his pitch for why they should hire him was that he felt he could help them get a NFL team. He did get the city of LA to approve a stadium for it - not an easy feat.

Maybe that's why he's leaving - as there are rumblings LA is going to get a NFL team soon - which would go along with rumours about his wife returning to California.

(of not adding hash brownie concessions)

I think Rob will be looking for work soon too

Could be but there have been rumours to that effect for years now and they always seem to run into some sort of wall.
