Armchair GM Thread 2022-2023

So in the dressing room this morning after pickup,
the guy in the corner who brings the beer throws out some speculation,
which oddly enough actually hits the mark quite a bit, says in one breath
the leafs are trading Kerfoot and Holl to ARI to get Chychrun at 50%
and then sign Scheen.
is this even possible

I mean, they can't sign Schenn, he's already under contract.

The rest is possible in theory, sure. In reality? Nah.

There's talk of the Leafs buying out Murray if they can't trade him and Vancouver buying out either Garland or Boeser. Any possibility of them getting together to trade Murray plus for Boeser, or maybe for Garland with Vancouver retaining salary?  That way Vancouver only has to keep Murray for one season so save on actual money and not have future cap penalties and the Leafs shed Murray and bring in a good winger.

Both play RW, so, unless Nylander or Marner are being moved, it would be an inefficient use of cap space - they're both paid too much to play on the 3rd line. They're also largely the kind of top 6 wingers the Leafs already have.

A Garland buyout would cost Vancouver $838,889 against the cap for 2 seasons, and then $1,838,889 against the cap for 4 more after that. A Murray buyout would be $687,500 for this upcoming season and then $2,000,000 for the season after that. So considerably better for Vancouver. I'd be open to a swap like that but would probably need to have Vancouver retain a little bit of Garland's deal since the potential buyouts favour them significantly.

Even if Garland is stuck on the 3rd line, which I don't think would necessarily be the case all of the time, he's the type of player that could help make our 3rd line one that does something as opposed to one that does nothing. So I don't see any problem with that.

While we're on Vancouver, I wonder if a Robertson for Hoglander swap is something that would be looked at (Nylander needs more/new Swedish friends).
