Tim Thomas/white house

Whether or not he supports the Obama administration or not, he should have gone. Seems pretty silly to me.

Yeah took the focus off the team and put it on himself.

Hooray for Tea Party Tim.  ::)

Now mind, you I would have turned down an invite to go meet Dubya.  But that's because my politics are correct.  8)

Seriously, if he doesn't respect the federal government then he doesn't need to go.  But what is just transparent nonsense is his assertion that it's not political, that both parties are to blame.

I don't know, I'd actually respect it a little bit more if it was some sort of specific problem with the current administration and he said so. As is, it's some sort of mushy-mouthed, half-realized statement of vague libertarian principles. I mean, if everyone is to blame and it's not statement of specific political intent, why not just go and enjoy the pomp and circumstances so as not to make this an issue.

Well, exactly.  He wants to "make a statement" but doesn't have the guts to come out and say anything meaningful.

Also, he needs to lose the capitalization of portentous nouns.

Maybe he's racist.

While I'm sure this is a joke on your part, there's a reality to it. Any time anyone talks about the constitution and the original views for the country that the founders of it had as if they should be carved in stone and never strayed from there's a monumental lack of racial sensitivity on display, to say nothing of a really terrible understanding of the constitution.

Excellent point.  Most of these self-appointed constitutionalists have no cogent understanding at all of the document and its evolution.

Plus, for all their denials, there are plenty of racists in the Tea Party.  A lot of them absolutely cannot stand that a black man got elected president.  Only the extremist white supremacists will openly admit it, of course.

meh, he has his reasons and beliefs for not being there, if anyone made a deal out of it, it was the media, not him, I support his decision.

Things like this amuse me to no end.

I am no expert in politics, let alone a foreign country's political landscape.

BUT, I am a hockey fan, and a fan of studying human behaviour.

Tim Thomas, who is fortunate enough to live in a country that enables him to play a game that pays him millions of dollars a year.

Plays a game for crying out loud for an organization who just won their first championship in almost 40 years.  An organization that no doubt as been very good to him.

The reception of championship teams at the White House has been a tradition for as long as I can remember.

So, Tim Thomas, feels he has every right, to basically say Fuck You to his country, and his team.

I doubt very much that there are as many racists as you suggest.Just because Thomas is not a left leaning socialist..is no reason to bring up that subject.

Is there someplace that would take a bet on the Republicans and the Bruins winning next year and only Timmy showing up to the fiesta?

...but seriously, if he really feels like he needs to take a stand then good on him and power to him but I just don't give a gnat's blind eye about some millionaire jocks political slant.

On the contrary.  The Tea Party is shot through with racism.  In our political culture they have to deny it, but no thinking analyst of the movement has any doubt.  It's one reason why you see very few people of color at TP rallies.

It was stupid of Thomas but then again I never understood the whole "meet the president" thing for winning sports teams. I think the whole event is stupid.

As long as no public money is spent on these events (which I'm sure it is) then I'm ok with it.

I don't see the need for a team that's already had a parade in the city that matters to get recognition from the President (who's generally not even a fan of said team) at the tax payers expense. Given the current per capita debt load of americans, they should be trimming as much excess as possible. Honouring team that's already been honoured with players that are payed huge sums of money is close to the definition of excess IMO.

If this is the reason Thomas didn't go, I'm all for it. If he didn't go for political reasons, I'm all for that too. It is a free country and calling him out on it (calling him a racist) without any further details is not appropriate.

He should however make a real statement about why he's not there. Being political is cool and all, but a thought out reason, or some points he disagrees on would give others an answer and get his message out there at the same time.

makes me wonder if a canadian team will get an invite to the white house

imagine the habs?  there would be riots in montreal, cause, you know, americans don't speak french
