Top 6 Winger

Goodrow and Coleman cost them two 2020 1sts and Nolan Foote (2019 1st).

Are we in a position to do something like that?

Yikes!

I think it's tough this year when they don't play other best teams in the league...maybe tougher to gauge your chances of winning the Cup.

They don't "need" a top 6 winger but:

Simmonds - Missed 13 games and counting.
Thornton - Missed 12 games and counting.

I wouldn't be banking on either of them being available through an entire cup run.  I realize Simmonds issue is an isolated fracture but its not like we are talking about a guy with a good track record of health the last few years.

The three thing I would be looking at for this team if they are going "all in" would be:

Another top 6 capable winger.  A capable 3rd line center.  A depth defensive defenseman in case of injuries to Holl/Muzzin/Bogosian.

We aren't going to get all three of those things (or at least shouldn't be spending that much prospect capital)
I mean the other teams are obviously going to upgrade if possible. There's no reason to let them add while you stand pat. You have to swing for the fences here. This is probably the best shot they'll ever have at a Cup with this group solely based on how the divisional playoffs are structured.

This is true but it's at least in part because Goodrow and Coleman weren't just rentals, strictly speaking. For guys with expiring deals I think the price would drop fairly sharpish.

Although that said I can't quite grasp giving up a first for Goodrow but, hey, I guess they don't regret it.

This also is a year where market prices haven't been set. We'll see what additional help will cost down the line. It might be less because teams are less willing to send picks for players that have to spend two weeks in quarantine or maybe there will be too few buyers. Who knows.

I think that we'll see things get moving on the trade front in the next week or so. With the quarantine rules, you would think that it would bump it ahead a little.

Wishlist, in order of preference:

Taylor Hall on double 50% retention

Rickard Rakell, who was one of the draft picks (along with John Gibson) that Burke traded for... I forget, some inconsequential bigguy who was the highest pick that year to never play in the NHL

Alex Wennberg

Conor Garland
Def Rakell but it would depend on the cost. I think Hall will cost way too much. Don't think Florida is dumping Wennberg and Ari isn't dumping Garland. Would love a guy like Forsberg, with Nash retaining cash, or Granlund.

1. Rakell
2. Hall
3. Foligno
4. Staal
5. Wennberg

Doubt Garland is being moved or worth the cost and Granlund doesn't seem to be much of an upgrade on Kerfoot, really.

I see what you did there.  Thanks for ripping the scab off that old wound.  :P :P :P :-X

They won the cup and they were not in a line for 50+years

Also Coleman was totally worth it.

If as good as players are available and can fill the holes that they need they should pull the trigger and go all in this season.

But I love what Dubas has been doing trading and off season wise. So i have full confidence on him that we will not see a Steen + Colaiacovo for Stempniak kind of trade and we will see some version of the Muzzin or Campbell trades

The minor problem with Rakell is that it throws a wrench into the Leafs expansion draft plans, which currently looks like they're going to go 8 skaters + 1 goalie. If they get Rakell they'd either have to expose him (which if the cost to acquire him isn't massive wouldn't be the end of the world, he'd just have to be seen as a rental from the get-go) or go with the 7F/3D format and expose Holl (which small slump aside, I don't see the team doing).

Or make some sort of deal with Seattle - which I think is a strong possibility, regardless of what happens at the deadline.

True. I feel like most of those deals ended up backfiring on teams so I'm a little wary about trying to game the system like they did but I guess that doesn't mean you shouldn't at least see what the options are.

Yup. Doesn't hurt to have a conversation to see if there's something that makes sense for both teams. A couple of the smaller deals Vegas made didn't backfire on the other team, so, there's potential for something there, maybe.
