Cool. All he has to do is pass it to Ovie lol.

So you're saying we should have traded for Ovechkin?

A little more than that involved last night: scored a goal from his knees:

25 mins ice time which led the D. Only goal against while he was on the ice was the empty net. Tied for team lead in the game in hits with 3. (little acknowledged stat: of Leafs dmen who played more than 12 games this year, Sandin led with 7.24 hits/60, he was 3rd the previous year - not a mind blowing reliable stat but he put on muscle and improved his physical game)

If he stays healthy, he's going to do well. He'll get a great contract after next season.

Capitals? Rasmus Sandin excited for larger role: ?The coaching staff believes in me?
?It means a lot,? Sandin said of the opportunities he?s getting in Washington. ?It?s very fun that they have that belief in you and now it?s up to me to keep playing good to stick in that spot. So, it?s been a lot of fun and it?s fun that the coaching staff believes in me for sure.?
...
?We like his age, we like his game,? Capitals GM Brian MacLellan said following the trade deadline. ?He's a puck-moving skill defenseman, he's a competitive guy. Real good 5-on-5 player so far, can add a little bit to the power play and there's upside here. I think he's played mostly third pair in Toronto. He's gonna get an opportunity with us to play higher in the lineup and I think he's excited about it and I think he can take advantage of it.

?There's only room to grow for him. He's 22, 23 years old and he's only going to get better going forward. So, we see hopefully a guy that we can build around moving forward, a young top-four defenseman that will play here a long time hopefully.?

Stat I did not know:

Sandin has the 2nd highest shooting percentage, 8.5%, in 5 on 5 for dmen who played more than 82 games in the last 5 years. Sandin has the 5th highest shooting percentage of 8.1% among dmen who played more than 82 games in the last five years in any situation.

Looks like he's going to get a chance to shoot more.

Grrrrrr Dubas

Another decent showing by Sandin in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Devils.
He led both the Devils & Caps with 29:58 ice time (must be a career high and a statement by his coach).
Was +2 with 2 shots (tied for 2nd on team), 2 hits (tied 3rd on team).
Was not on the ice for either goal against.

In the 3 games, he's made no error that resulted in a goal against.

1G 4A 5Pts +3 in 3 games with ice time going up from 22min to 25mins to 30 mins.

He's off to a good start making a claim for a top 4 spot.

Three games doesn't a bad trade make but I really do wonder with Keefe's "Liljegren needs to be better" nonsense after benching him is a bit of an indication that Keefe went too far down the "rookie/youth bad; veteran good" mentality with Sandin and should have been pushing him more instead of sheltering him.

I don't think it's nonsense with Liljegren. He had a bad game against EDM. He also benched Holl for a game as well a few weeks ago. Like he said at the time, don't give me a reason to take you out. Leafs have lots of options now and .
As for Sandin, he was given the chance to take over for Rielly when he was out and if memory serves it didn't go so well. The PP struggled to the point where Keefe took him off PP1. It's also pretty clear he can't handle the heavy game. He's not good at clearing the front of the net, boxing guys out and struggles against larger opponents on the rush and in the corners.
Getting McCabe put him on the outside looking in again.

I like Sandin but he's been with the Leafs for 5 years now and some of those issues aren't going to change. He's a good 3rd pairing guy and maybe a #4 on a lower team. I think the Leafs sold high on him and got a 1st rounder for him before he became Dermott 2.0.
As for his first 3 games in Wash, good on him

I see Engvall went from 1st line to benched in the same game last night. Wow for a guy that was irreplaceable. Played a whopping 8+ minutes last night.

He's never going to play a heavy game but you are underestimating him.  Sure, his short stint QBing PP1 didn't go well ... but then again maybe that also the fault of the other guys.

My prediction: he'll be a 2nd pairing guy the league, maybe even a #2 for some teams, for a long time.

In order to be a top guy he needs to be able to play the heavy game. Sandin by your own admission is never going to play that game. I think you're overvaluing him. The PP is 27% with Rielly and 17% without him.

Truthfully, I won't care if it happens because he's not on the Leafs. Let's see how the pick turns out and if Gus can have some kind of impact in the playoffs.

I mean, I do get that it's annoying as Leafs fans giving up too early on players like Brad Boyes, Steve Sullivan, Alex Steen etc., and some of those were bad trades but it can also be true that someone could put together a career elsewhere that they can't in Toronto.
