Training Camp Thread - Currently with Marner now

That's great news. I'm sure they'll do whatever is best for his development, but if staying up won't hinder it...

Moving forward on the cap-crunch, I'd agree that a winger would be the logical choice for relief. Leafs are spending about $25-million there.

Sandin looked good last night, and he looks a fair bit ahead of Liljegren to this eye.

I thought he looked like Gardiner out there.

I think Kapanen could be traded if one of the younger players steps up and proves they can be effective on that third line.  They might just be evaluating at this point.

I'd be surprised. Trading a guy you just made a commitment to in the offseason before the season starts doesn't exactly speak to fostering a healthy atmosphere around the club.

But better defensively. I think Sandin is ahead of Liljegren but they play different games. Liljegren seems to be the more stay at home guy right now. Sandin should be on the team tho. He's by far the best #5 in camp.

The @MapleLeafs have assigned goaltender Brandon Halverson to the Toronto Marlies (AHL).

Goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo has been placed on waivers.

I didn't mean before the season starts.  I figured it's something that could happen around the time Hyman or Dermott comes back.  If one of the wingers looks good at camp, and then looks good during the first bit of the Marlies season, then you can move a winger and have them take the spot.

If not then the Leafs go the season right up against the cap.

Now that we?ve seen a couple of preseason games, what would people like to see out of our forwards to start the year?

Kapanen-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Agostino
Moore-Spezza-Petan
Goat
?

If Kapanen doesn?t feel right on the left, I can imagine bumping up Mikheyev in his place.

I know it?s only the preseason and many of the NHLers aren?t even trying but it is nice to see some of the depth guys doing well.

I think Hyman will be gone before Kappy and I don't see Dubas trading Hyman this year. Leafs will go at it up against the cap.

I expect to see four split squad games with Leafs top Marlies bottom builds, and then four dialed in games with basically NHL roster and then Marlies + vets rosters to close out the preseason.

They really need the entire team at some point it they want to work on the powerplay and penalty kills in game situations. They should have the final 3 games as close to complete roster as possible

Great news about Sandin.

Liljegren has fallen a bit into his shadow, it seems.  What do people here think about the way he's looked so far in camp?

You could tell how good Sandin was on the Marlies last year; he's just so poised with the puck which isn't very common for a guy who was 18 at the time.  He could turn out to be a steal where he was drafted.

Liljegren hasn't stood out to me either good or bad. I mean he doesn't look bad like Harpur but he also isn't distinguishing himself so far. He still has time and if he can become a reliable bottom pair guy that's better than nothing I guess.

I?m sort of curious about how plausible it would be to convert Kapanen into a 3C.  He would seem to have all the necessary physical skills outside of face offs, which can be learned over time.  He?s a defensive menace. Why can?t a guy like him learn the position?
