Simmons suggests in his column today that Paul Romanuk is likely coming back from Europe to be the #2 play-by-play guy behind Hughson. That's excellent news if true.

Bob Cole has been confirmed as returning next year.  I'm very excited for more Kessel with the puck....I mean JVR....I mean Gunnarsson.

They've officially announced who will do play-by-play:

@JeffMarek

Rogers announces Jim Hughson, Dave Randorf, Paul Romanuk and Bob Cole as play-by-play voices for NHL package

Randorf and Romanuk are great additions.  Particularly glad to see the latter back.

Good on Randorf giving up a pretty good gig with the CFL on TSN to jump ship.  I think he's the least foolish from the TSN talents recognizing the situation.

Does anyone really like Jim Hughson?

I think he's kinda the vanilla ice cream of play-by-play guys. To me he was always #2 behind Chris Cuthbert in terms of who the Leafs get. But that's partly because the competition wasn't really fierce after that. Joe Bowen is awful and while Bob Cole has more energy in his voice it's kinda hard to hear him fumble through a game so often. I don't know much about Randorf or Romanuk but I wouldn't be surprised to see them both surpass Hughson.

Yeah, I guess that's my problem with it and why I think that CBC eventually losing HNIC is kind of a good thing(I may have made this argument before). Opinion on Cole might be 50/50 but he has his partisans. Most lead broadcasters on a flagship broadcast will at least have someone saying that they're at the top of the business. Hughson just seems like everyone's vaguely alright with him which isn't saying much if HNIC is supposed to be an industry leader.

I enjoy Hughson and Bowen.

Hughson always seems knowledgeable, and Bowen is just a big Leafs fan...and I don't mind that.

Cole was great, but isn't great anymore.  The one I don't like so much is Cuthbert.

Hopefully they don't drag Millen along.  Somehow he ends up being on about 90% of the NHL broadcasts I watch in a year.

That's my biggest concern, and just in general who the colour guys will be. Those guys were always the weakest link on the Sportsnet/CBC broadcasts. The face that they already had Millen on the CBC during the playoffs frightens me though.

Not just in the playoffs, but right there with Bob Cole calling Game 7 of the Chicago-LA series.  I mean, maybe the Rangers-LA lives up to the hockey of the West Finals, but that very well could have been the defining game of the playoffs.  I still don't really understand the need for the 3rd broadcaster on games though.  Maybe it's bias because the Leafs get stuck with the negativity of Healy most games but it just seems like they don't really offer anything of added insight.

Having Romanuk back for games is a big positive.  I would much rather listen to him than Hughson.  I find Hughson pretty boring.  The only time he really seems to get going is for Canucks games (and that's fine for a broadcaster to still have a team that they root for) but when he lacks energy every other game I find it just kind of slips into the background.  Vintage Cole sounds fantastic and for the 5-10 minutes that he's coherent now I would take that over Hughson.

I want to hold off on assessing Randorf until he starts calling hockey regularly though because who knows what his game calling style will be when he's only doing dedicated hockey.

I probably have different cares - I don't care if a broadcaster/play-by-play guy excites me, but I do care if they're annoying.  So someone like Hughson I'm fine with, I like his voice.  But Millen, Healy, Bowen...those kinds of guys annoy me.  Most of the regional team broadcasts I suppose.

Ok then I add on 'smeagoled'.  I find that annoying.

I think Cole and Bowen are great.  I don't care if Cole gets the names wrong a few times a game - its really not that a big a deal.  He is the best at providing the energy that the arena has and transforming that to my home.  I like Bowen for the regional games because he's a Leaf Fan - and I think that's important as a Leaf fan watching Leaf games in the region where Leaf games are broadcast.

Hughson is one I don't care for.  Too boring and bland.

I agree that a colour man is just as important.  I miss Harry Neale.

Ha! Fair enough.

Now that Romanuk is coming back to Canada it's time to bust out my Paul Romanuk story.

Years ago I'm at Wayne Gretzky's pub in downtown Toronto.  At that time Paul Romanuk was broadcasting a radio show live from the bar.  He was sitting a few booths away from where myself and a few buddies were sitting.  So being half in the bag from beer my buddies urge me on to call in the show and ask Romanuk if he'll buy us a round of beers.  So I call in and ask my staged question to Jacques Demers (the current guest on the phone) which was something like "are you interested in getting back into coaching at some point"..and then I say "and part 2 of my question is for Paul, hey Paul we're sitting a few booths away can you buy us a round of beers?"

So Romanuk right away says "no, I don't make enough money" and we all laugh and the bar has a good chuckle since they're broadcasting the show over the speakers.

They go to commerical, and we all turn to Romanuk and give a "what's the deal" arm motion....and he says "sorry can't" and then I yell out "Lansberg would have bought us a round!"

Romanuk throws his head back in disgust, promptly goes up to the bar and buys us a round.  Comes over, we shake his hand for being a good sport and laugh it off.
