Whitney Houston dead?

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/whitney-houston-regal-superstar-records-movies-whose-career-010742070.html

She was the pop queen of the '80's.  One of  my favourite singers of the era, no doubt.  A storied career, a ruined life.  Sad.

Rest in peace, Whitney.  Your singing made you many a fan out there, and you'll always be remembered as the one with 'the voice'.

Well what's your point about transcending the top 40? The Beatles had a lot more songs in the top 40 than Whitney did and I bet you'd never have heard of those obscure songs that they had, without those popular tunes.

By saying top 40 radio, as opposed to top 40 charts, I'm talking about the radio format that just plays whatever is popular. Popular doesn't mean bad, like you point out the Beatles sold a lot of records themselves, but so do a lot of bands that are pretty forgettable. The Beatles have lasting appeal because they transcended just being popular and were, you know, really great.

Whitney Houston made popular music, sure. But lasting? Unique? Not for me. So it's sad that she's dead in the sense that, as I said, it's sad that anyone succumbs to their addictions but not in the Cobain/Winehouse/Elliott Smith sense of their death precluding really great music being made.

But that's just me and I'm only speaking for my opinion. If you think Whitney Houston transcended pop music, more power to you.

Top 40 radio that has nothing to do with top 40 charts? I don't get that.

But, I get what you're saying with the rest.

No big argument here. Like I said, I wasn't her biggest fan in the world but she definitely was a talent.

I don't think we can argue about that.

It's just a short hand way of saying her music was popular but there wasn't much else to say for it.

She had a big, technically great voice absolutely. But even with it at it's peak, I mean, "Dance With Somebody" or "The Greatest Love of All"? Personally, even if we're grading on the curve of pop music I think at her best she released pretty forgettable stuff and I'm someone who fully embraces and admits to a love of good pop music.

How old were you when "Dance With Somebody" came out? I'm 41 and I think I was 15 or 16 at the time. To comment on anyone who's actually sang and had a number one song in their life while your mom was feeding you fruit loops or whatever, at that time, would seem kind of stupid from Whitney's point of view. Don't you think?

Personally, I love a good Dylan tune or the Stones but Whitney broke a lot of barriers in her time. Not unlike Elvis did when he didn't write songs for himself either.

No, or at least, I think it would make her pretty unreasonable if she did. I think all music can be fairly and legitimately criticized. I appreciate it being of the zeitgeist and everything but, again, something being popular is not the issue here. Someone can have opinions on classical music that was written hundreds of years before their birth, I think it's pretty above board to have an opinion on pop hits of the 80's.

I'm not entirely sure what you're on about here but, again, if you think Whitney Houston made great music or music that will last a long time because it was vital and important then I'm not arguing with you. That's a matter of taste. I just come down on the other side of the divide on that one.

She isn't even in the movie, but I keep thinking about the graduation scene from "Say Anything" and the guy's rendition of "The Greatest Love of All"

Though her songs weren't always my brand of vodka, her voice was truly one of the greatest I've ever heard... So sad it's been silenced so young. What a tragedy.

Becoming incredibly famous and rich at a young age does not seem to end well for many artists.

In her day her voice and control of it was incredible. RIP Whitney.

Breaking news: Bobby Brown has been found dead in his Hotel, also in the bath. He'd left a note which read "Two can play that game"

So...this was a joke?

Over the course of a 30-year career in which she established herself as one of the most-admired and influential singers of her time, Houston won six Grammys, 30 Billboard awards and 22 American Music Awards.

The soundtrack for the hit movie in which she starred, "The Bodyguard," was among the best-selling film soundtracks ever.

Why does somebody always try to slip in a joke when somebody dies? If you're all that funny, people would notice it. You don't have to try so hard.

I think I'm on the same side of the divide as you are. Something about Whitney stays with me though.

Either way, she had a phenomenal voice and may she rest in peace.

Coronor's toxicology reports in on cause of Houston's death...cocaine & marijuana found in her system, as well as a case of atherosclerosis (heart disease).  Here is the story:
