whaaaaaaa

Already replied to Mirtle on this, but doesn't seem like the best situation for BriseBois to step in as GM with Yzerman hovering around.  If things don't go well immediately for him, will there be pressure to kick him out and have Yzerman swoop in again as GM?  Sure the GM always runs the risk of being replaced, but when the previous, very successful GM is still there with the organization, it's easy to lean on him when things go badly.

Have to assume it's personal reasons rather than something akin to what happened with Linden.

I mean I gotta imagine this was 100% Yzerman's decision. No way Tampa forced him out. Must be some kind of personal reason. Maybe he was burned out. Maybe he wants to spend more time with his kids.

Well they did say it was Yzerman stepping down, nobody suggested he's forced out.  Is he really going to stay on in an "Advisory" role like Lou did for 1 week, or is he moving on somewhere else, Seattle expansion team maybe?

Or it could be personal reasons as you suggested.

Perhaps there's soon to be a vacancy for the GM job in Detroit and this is Part A of Stevie Y making himself available for it.

Well significant NHL news is happening again.  First the Patches trade, then the Melnyk interview, now the Yzerman news, we just need Nylander contract to drop and the day is complete.

Yzerman's contract is up after this season too.

4pm presser with the sanitized explanation. BriseBois has been waiting in the wings (and I think read somewhere that he has been prevented from interviewing) while most in the industry have already flagged him as ready for a full gig. BriseBois was the GM for the Syracuse Crunch.

*finger guns*

Holland just re-upped for 2 years so I could see Stevie saying to the Bolts ownership that he'd like the job, will spend this year grooming/aiding his replacement, then move to Detroit the following season to take over the helm, perhaps with Holland staying on as an advisor for that second year.

My read on the situation is starting to be: Yzerman was in the final year of his contract with Tampa. Teams very rarely go into a season with a GM in that type of contract situation, and will often re-up them prior to the season starting. Tampa ownership went to him and wanted to sign him to an extension. For whatever reason (either he has eyes for Detroit or Seattle, or other personal things) Yzerman said no. So with him not confirmed for 19/20 they decided to promote BriseBois up to avoid any uncertainty in the future.

I know it's just bad twitter writing but saying he has a family there sure makes it sound like it's one of many.

There had better be a photo of little Stevie sleeping on Red Wings sheets headlining a Player's Tribune 'article' to accompany this press conference.
