2024-25 NHL Thread

Would’ve been nicer if they won in regulation but they were down most of the game, so kudos to them staying alive in the playoff race and sweeping their season series with the Panthers.

Montreal is a problem. Tie it up with 9 seconds left and win it in OT over the Panthers

Lane Hutson is an animal. 3 more assists. He now has the 7th most points by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. The guys in front of him are Chelios, Bourque, Housley, Suter, Leetch and Murphy.
He's probably going to pass a bunch of them in his last 8 or so games

Our friend from 4-Nations, "LOL @ Binner", is now 11-2 since the tournament ended. St. Louis is on a serious roll with a 10 game winning streak now, effectively pushing Calgary and Vancouver further out of playoff contention. Too bad, I was hoping for a miracle that all the Canadian teams would make it to the playoffs, but I will settle for five out of the seven, if the Habs and sens can hang on.

In my own mind I’m having a hard time separating the politics and my extreme disappointment in Gretzky from how impressive this is. Because it is, you just can’t compare the eras and the quality of the goals, this is truly remarkable.

So yeah it’s an amazing achievement and truly the best goal scorer of all time, but to celebrate a Russian breaking a Canadian record hurts a bit.

I mean it's kind of ironic that a Canadian (who has gone full blown MAGA) of Ukrainian heritage has his record broken by a Russian. As someone of Ukrainian heritage myself, I'm really disappointed in who Wayne is.

I go back and forth on how I feel about the record being broken.

It's easy to say a lot of horrible things about how I feel about Russia. I do get that its a lot harder to speak out against Putin if you were basically a test lab child intended to be a champion athlete for Russia from the get go. But it's still hard to separate his ties to Putin and Putin's kids.

At the end of the day, it's a sporting accomplishment and not a societal or humanitarian one. I think its ok to celebrate the fact that Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. Era adjusted scoring isn't overly reliable because so many other factors would change if Ovechkin was playing in the 80s or Gretzky in 2025 but Hockey reference has a tally that would put Oveckin 1st by a mile at 999 goals.

It was kind of cool seeing him refuse to go on the ice for the empty net goal, wanting to break the record on an actual goalie (or not so nice I guess as it will put someone in the record books forever). Yet Ovechkin popped out on the ice to congratulate Ryan Leonard who scored his first NHL goal on the empty net.

A 1st NHL goal and an 894th goal scored in the same period of hockey 893 goals apart.

ERA ADUSTED GOAL SCORING

I'd like to thank Sportsnet for playing the Blue Jays on four channels and the Leafs game on replay on two instead of airing a historic achievement.

12 more years of this garbage
