It's a little unfortunate that they had to announce "contract ... will not be renewed" - seems odd to effectively fire the guy.

I would bet they gave him the option to resign or announce he's leaving and he refused.

Given the way things have played out there over the last year, I think having him extended like this would scare away more talented players and coaches than having him as a lame duck would.
