So...what's happening with this deal?
If you're referring to the trade rumour I posted, the Sixers denied the players involved.

Oh no sorry shoulda specified, I'm referring to the Lowry deal...afaik it's still not finalized?

Word around the internet is NY might match Fields' offer sheet.

Also, a very sketchy rumour has the Raps trying to see if Portland is interested in doing a S&T with Batum before they officially match Minnesota's offer sheet and are unable to deal him. The rumour, as per RealGM, also goes on to say it's a longshot (Portland really likes Batum and the Raps really have nothing to entice them with) and that the Raps are also sniffing around the likes of Kirilenko, Chandler, Josh Smith (yeah good luck) and Richard Jefferson.

Well, you never know, right? Yeah, the Raps aren't jampacked with assets but they have some interesting pieces in the way of expiring contracts, Ed Davis, DeRozan and so on. I definitely wouldn't mind it if the Knicks matched on Fields though.

And in a minor move round-up, Ray Allen to the Heat to shoot wide open 3's, Rashard Lewis to the Heat to say remind people that he's still in the league and Marcus Camby to the Knickerbockers.

I'm having a hard time seeing how the Heat don't repeat unless they get arrogant again.  They were missing that guy who is reliable at hitting uncontested jumpers

Calderon has more or less asked for a trade. Can't blame the guy, BC has tried to replace him/trade him every chance he gets.

Also Rockets plan to Amnesty Scola. I'm surprised - put Scola on a team with a legitimate superstar and you've got yourself a great complementary piece. He's a super efficient scorer and a hard-nosed rebounder. Defensively he's so-so, but his offense more than makes up for it.

So if Calderon won't be around why did the Raps let Bayless go? Wouldn't he have been the perfect guy to be a backup pg?

I don't think they entirely thought this through to be honest.

They had to rescind the qualifying offers to Bayless and Weems to have enough space to blow everyone else's offer to Nash out of the water but now he's Laker and they need a backup to replace Calderon. Finding a guy to backup Lowry won't be hard though.

Honestly, if there was anything resembling a genuine interest in Calderon out there I think he'd have been traded long before now.

So, I'm still struggling to get my head around it but...it really looks like the Knicks are going to let Jeremy Lin walk away.

It was a brilliant RFA offer.  That last year was going to cost them something horrific like 40+ million dollars because of the luxury tax.

In Raptors news, James Johnson was traded away due to Fields contract and trying to keep cap space.  He's pretty dumb (smoking MJ on a plane) but he was a good defensive player and I think he would have been nice to have coming off the bench still.

Well, yeah, but I'm not really puzzled from the Rockets point of view. I'm more confused about the Knicks handing out money to guys like Steve Novak and Jason Kidd and then the whole mess to begin with. You're right, that last year would kill them but they've already got 55 million or so committed to Chandler/Melo/Amar'e so they're going to be up into the tax anyway.

Maybe Melo got pissy with Lin holding the ball?

Also, regarding the whole 2012 Team USA vs. 92 Team USA thing...

I think it's closer than most people think. I think people really forget that Bird and Magic were at the absolute ends of their careers. I think a 34 year old Kobe Bryant matches up pretty well with either guy in terms of their ability to get stuff done on the court. Then you have an in his prime Jordan vs. an in his prime Lebron which is about as close to a push as things get.

After that it's pretty even. I don't think the 2012 squad would have anyone at the 4 spot as good as Barkley or Malone but if what the US was sending was Bosh/Love/Griffin it wouldn't be some sort of colossal mismatch. I think Dwight Howard is as good as Pat Ewing or David Robinson so there's not as much of a gap at centre. The two guards thing is something that breaks down pretty well for the 2012 team with MJ/Drexler vs. Kobe/Wade and I think the 2012 team has better players at small forward(Lebron/KD/Carmelo vs. Pippen/Bird/Mullins) . Then at PG...I might give it to the 2012 team too. Williams/Westbrook/Paul is a pretty good matchup offensively and defensively vs Magic/Stockton.

Make me put money on it and I'd probably back the '92 team but it would be a lot closer than a lot of old cranks are making it sound.

Can some explain the amnesty waivers? I've tried reading up on it and can't wrap my head around it.

Yeah, it's sort of confusing. The way I understand it is that each team can waive one player who has a contract that was signed under the old CBA and have it come off their cap. Then teams bid on a player with preference going to teams that are under the cap and they bid how much of his contract they want to take on. The highest bid wins and they become responsible for that portion of the player's contract and cap hit while his old team just covers the balance of dollars.
