The Blackhawks set an NHL record for the best start to a season, beating the San Jose Sharks 2-1 on Friday night to give them at least one point in their first 17 games.

Maybe that's since they changed the rules at some point ..

But they're only roughly half way there to match the Flyers in my opinion.

Chicago's record is for the longest streak to start the season. The Flyers still have the longest consecutive point streak in general.

Yeah, just at a glance it looks like the Flyers' streak started in game 3 of the season after losing game 2 to Atlanta.

Oilers could be the team who finally knocks off the Hawks.

The outcome will probably change still knowing both teams, but it would be worth a laugh to see

Chicago forces overtime after Stalberg tied the game with under three minutes to go, and Hossa won it in overtime. Unreal.

With the way the Hawks are going, it actually wouldn't surprise me if they fall in the 1st round of the playoffs. They seem primed for a major playoff disappointed. Of course, they also could sweep their way to the Cup.

And last in the league in hits.  Surprised the CBC crew left that one out on Saturday when they were going on about it.  ::)

That actually boosts my prior assertion that hits are a pretty useless stat.  A team that is owning the puck possession, picking off passes and successfully poke checking can have very low hit stats while dominating the game.  Compare that to a team that never has the puck, and all they do is hit that dominant team's players and then let them pick the puck up again.  By definition to lay a hit you have to not have possession of the puck.

Yep, you pretty much nailed it.

Sounds like you would just love touch football. ;D

Will Chicago ever lose in regulation?

Doesn't look like it.

This is either one of the most dominant teams to come along in a while, or it is one heck of a streak that is the result of a team peaking waaay too early and they are due to flame out at some point.

Apologis if this has been covered, but Larry Brooks in NY threw out the idea that the Rangers should use their buyout on Brad Richards, and some Rangers blogs and whatnot threw it around after, too.

Has he been that bad this season, or is it just due to the cap coming down that this is even suggested?

I'm sure Richards would love that.  Gets a ton of cash and then can sign another big contract with some other team.

I haven't seen much of the Rangers this year, so it's hard to say, but, his numbers aren't great (not awful, just not what you'd hope for from him) and the team's results have been a little disappointing. So, maybe he's just being make the scapegoat? The Rangers are actually okay in terms of the cap for next season, so, unless they make some big moves, buying him out won't be to free up space. I don't see the team having any actual interest in it - this is just Brooks trying to create some buzz and some fan frustration.

He's been somewhat invisible in a lot of games this year. Tortorella has him on the 2nd line and he's been playing about 18 mins a night for the last 8 games (played in the 15 min range in 2 of those games). 5 A and no goals in his last 12 GP.

For 7M or whatever it is a year he's got to pick it up big time. I was wondering if Nonis might look into him...

Kovalchuk is averaging 25:50.

Wow.  That is insane.

I guess the idea is that with only 1/2 as many games to play this year, you can play these guys an extra 4-5 minutes a game?  I wonder if coaches are going to regret this come the playoffs?
