I kind of like Paul Coffey's suggestion, take Bettman and Fehr out of the room and the let the others decide.

They tried that. Daly and the younger Fehr had some long "negotiating" sessions, and, well, it's lead them here.

Well, there's not a real chance of it happening anyways but wasn't that just Daly and the Steve Fehr? ( no others? )

Of course, because if you can't get get 2 people to agree, getting 400 to agree is the solution.

Wow, what big committee's you have grandma.

It was, but, a number of the other guys on either side are problems as well.

It's an understandable jab if you're on a playground and 8 years old. Trying to get the last word in makes them both sound like complete fools. We all know that from the Daly comment will come another Fehr comment and the cycle will continue until they officially cancel the season and blame the other one for making childish comments.

Sure, but, let's be honest - Fehr's likely to make some sort of asinine comment regardless of what anyone on the NHL's side says publicly. He has tended to launch the first salvos.

I'm not really sure who's started the feces throwing contest....far as I can see, both sides are covered in it. And the fact that Fehr may just throw a jab is no reason for the NHL to throw a jab first. Like I said, that's schoolyard thinking.

Never knew this:

John Buccigross ‏@Buccigross

Last year, NFL owners shared 60% of 9 billion in revenues while NHL shared 4.5% of 3.3 billion.

And that's why the NFL's hard cap makes a certain degree of sense. NFL teams have their salary cap covered by shared revenue before they even sell a single ticket.

A hard cap/minimal revenue sharing system, which the NHL is desperately clinging to and is unique in the world of sports, essentially guarantees a system with crazy rich teams at the top and teams with no chance of profitability at the bottom.

Yeah that certainly sounds logical to me.

From Bill Daly:

"Nothing was ever said or even suggested that we needed the details of our proposal "down to the comma. We told them the issues we wanted addressed in the system.  We told them we have provided a proposal that we think will effectively address those issues.  But we told them that we are open to discussing other ways to address those issues if they want to propose any.  In fact, we used the exact example of "if we need 5 and we have proposed 3+2 to get there, that we are happy to listening to and considering 4+1 instead. I'm not sure why they chose to characterize the way they did.  As I've said before.  I can only control what we say."

But the "5" is the NHL's wants. So in other words Daly is saying "We don't care how we get exactly what we want, we just need to get exactly what we want."

I mean 3+2 vs. 4+1 has no meaning when one side says they need 5 and the other says 8 (or pick a number).

Oh boy they are meeting today. How exciting.

Supposedly some GM's are attending as well.. Yzerman and Nieuwendyk.  Interesting choices if those are the GM's.. very recently former players.  Hmmmm.

maybe tomorrow they can meet wearing funny hats to see if that changes things.

That's what I was thinking. That's not exactly called compromising.

It's Daly's way of saying, "We'll give a little in certain areas, but we're then going to want a little more in other areas."

What's with all these former Leafs coming out and ripping on Bettman!?

First it was Jeff O'Neill on twitter, then Ian White, now Versteeg. Who's it going to be next?

I heard Hoglund tried to send some comments to the media too but his fax machine broke down.

(He hasn't caught on to this whole "internets" thing yet)

The FAN is reporting that Brian Burke is in attendence at the negotiating meeting tonight starting at 7.
The question is will his tie be done up? That's the hardcore issue at hand tonight.
