2012 NFL Thread

Yeah, I feel bad for these replacements but the league is a joke right now... and if Belichick doesn't get at least a game, it's a bigger joke then I thought.

NFL and NFLRA have reached an agreement in principle, according to ESPN.

If ratified, they could be back as soon as this Sunday.

NFL officials make approximately $150,000/yr.  The NFLRA was asking for an increase of $16.5M over 5 years.  Lot of money?  Not when the NFL is slated to make $60B in revenues over the same period.

It's incredible how insatiable greedy and indelibly stubborn a league  can get not to mention ridiculously illogical in that it needs only pay it's officials a scant percentage from it's revenue ($16.5M equals approx. 0.2% of $60B)!, yet it has been willing to sacrifice not only it's reputation but anger the fans & players alike.

Well played, Mr. Goodell (*with heavy sarcasm*).

Well, it's rather light I think but I'm glad it didn't go unpunished.

Bill Belichick fined $50,000 for contact with a game official: http://www.baltimoresun.com/bal-bill-belichick-fined-50000-for-contact-with-an-official-20120926,0,6327859.story ?

$50,000 isn't light, not for a coach, I don't think. No excuse for Belichick here though.

Isn't the coach supposed to be the leader of the team? Should he not be setting an example on how his players are to conduct himself? Personally, I think he should have gotten a couple of games.

Also heard on the FAN this morning that part of it was that the NFL didn't want to be in charge of pensions any more.

Good news all around for NFL fans I think. :)

150K a year for working one day a week for half of the year? Man, it's not like these guys are protagonists in a Dickens novel ;)

As far as I understood, it wasn't just a pay increase that was the problem. The NFL didn't want to give life-time pensions to part-time employees (especially considering full-time employees within the leage who make considerably less don't get one). And apparently the Refs wanted a job security policy in place that would make it difficult for a ref to ever be removed. I'm not so sure the NFL deserves the criticism it has been inundated with.

Not to be an apologist for Bill Belichick, but he said he was trying to get the official's attention so he could ask him if that field goal was reviewable. and the official just ignored him. Now the field goal was actually pretty close to missing so that is understandable.
Should he have grabbed him? Of course not, but I don't think he deserved a game suspension.

I don't really get that though. The fact that the NFL, a gigantic revenue generating machine, decided to screw over their other non-rich full-time employees by taking away their pensions is somehow a strike against the Refs, who have collective bargaining rights, wanting to keep theirs?

Likewise, the idea of refs as being part-time officials who "work one day a week" isn't really accurate either. They only work games one day a week but there's other things like reviewing film and training that take more of their time.

That's not really accurate. What the Refs didn't want is the existence of back-up crews that would allow the league to replace officials on a week-to-week basis. I think most people want more security than that.

The difference was 3.3 million dollars per year for a league that generates 10 billion dollars a year. That's .033% of league revenues and, because of it, they jeopardized the health of players and the legitimacy of their games. I think that criticism is pretty well-earned.

Well if that 3million a year figure was the only sticking point for the NFL then, sure, they should have closed this deal before the season even started.

But 200K to ref a game per week and watch a few videos aint too shabby.

It's not shabby at all and to be honest, there aren't a heck of a lot of these jobs available. I've got a feeling folks are lined up around many blocks for these positions - especially at that wage. I'm okay if they're paid good money if it keeps the cream at the top.

A simple fine is completely out of line with Goodell's heavy hand though. What if this was a player who grabbed a ref? It also begs the question: What if this wasn't a replacement ref? I think we've come to expect larger statements from Goodell. There really should have been a suspension here.

I totally agree. Especially with Bilichick's 'Spy Gate' conviction.

Goodell's apology...

Obviously when you go through something like this, it's painful for everybody. Most importantly, it's painful for fans," he said on a conference call Thursday, about 12 hours after the league reached a deal to bring back the regular officials. "We're sorry to have to put fans through that. Sometimes you have to go through something like that in the short term for the right agreement for the long term."

Peyton Manning.  That is all.  #broncos

That was incredible lastnight. I actually turned the game on when it was 24-0 and had changed the channel. I went back a little later and the come back was in full effect....then interception..then another....Incredible!
