2012 NFL Thread

Just sayin'. In the "who's the bigger jerk?" bowl, I'm not sure how Moss' history of bad behavior compares to Lewis, you know, maybe killing two dudes.

It's still a "maybe." No maybes with Moss.

Yes, but it's a "maybe" that he's a murderer as opposed to a certainty that Moss smoked pot and threw weak blocks.

Guilty until proven innocent, eh?

I'm just trying to be proportional here, balancing the fact that Randy Moss has been known to leave games early vs. Ray Lewis lying to the police about his involvement in an incident in which two men were stabbed to death.

I'm no fan of Ray Lewis who belongs in the 20-30% of the NFL's "criminal element" (an eye-opening book once written exposing minority of NFLers charged or associated with crime -- sexual assault charges, rape, gang activities, etc.).  Maybe Ray Lewis has reformed, maybe this was part of his troubled past (having grown up in a ghetto & his affiliation with gangs & drugs, etc.), still, no matter what, he definitely hasn't had a smooth road well-travelled in his life off of the field.

Read an article on how Randy Moss was 'transformed' playing for coach Jim Harbaugh, and how much he has changed in playing for the 'Niners (no more showcasing of ego, no more 'showoff', etc.), and how his contributions on-field have helped the 49ers in that category.  A team player and no longer a me-first attitude.

I'm not a big NFL follower but I seem to recall Moss going through the same thing when he joined the Patriots.

All kinds of talk about how he changed, and then after the 2009 season he was back to old ways when he didn't "feel wanted", traded by the pats, waived by the vikings and retired after the season and a few games with the Titans.

ICYMI, pretty interesting story coming out of Oakland. Former Raider Tim Brown came out and said that he believes head coach Bill Callahan purposely threw the 2002 Super Bowl to Tampa. His proof?

"We get our game plan for victory on Monday, and the game plan says we?re gonna run the ball. We averaged 340 (pounds) on the offensive line, they averaged 280 (on the defensive line). We?re all happy with that, everybody is excited."

Then, 36 hours before game time (according to Brown), Callahan completely changed the game plan. The plan they ended up executing during the game was not what they practiced all week. Brown also claimed that Callahan hated the Raiders (despite being coach) and was good friends with Tampa coach John Gruden.

"We all called it sabotage...because Callahan and Gruden were good friends... He hated the Raiders so much that he would sabotage the Super Bowl so his friend can win the Super Bowl. That?s hard to say, because you can?t prove it. But the facts are what they are, that less than 36 hours before the game we changed our game plan. And we go into that game absolutely knowing that we have no shot. That the only shot we had if Tampa Bay didn?t show up."

To further ignite the conspiracy-fueled fire, hall of famer Jerry Rice backed up Brown's claims.

"I was very surprised that he waited till the last second and I think a lot of the players they were surprised also so in a way maybe because he didn't like the Raiders he decided 'Hey look maybe we should sabotage just a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out and win this one."

Of course, Bill Callahan has now come out and completely refuted the claims made by his former players.

"While I fully understand a competitive professional football player's disappointment when a game's outcome doesn't go his team's way, I am shocked, saddened and outraged by Tim Brown's allegations and Jerry Rice's support of those allegations made through various media outlets over the last 24 hours. To leave no doubt, I categorically and unequivocally deny the sum and substance of their allegations."

We'll never know what actually happened, but the prospect of a head coach throwing a Super Bowl seems extremely far-fetched. Who knows, I guess it's possible, but highly unlikely. This is another strange story in a week of strange stories coming out of the football world. SEE: T'eo, Crabtree, Rex Ryan runs a red light and causes a car crash.

There's a pretty funny thread over on Reddit today.

Roger Goodell stopped by to do an AMA (Ask Me Anything).

6500 comments and he chose to answer 14 only.  That is pretty weak participation for an AMA.

Anyways some of the comments are pretty funny.  I'd provide a link, but there is quite a bit of profanity.  The natives are restless needless to say.

Your move Gary.

Interesting 1st half. Ravens causing turnovers and converting. Not too sure about the fake FG play though. That could come back to bite them in the butt, especially if the 49ers continue their 2nd half trend. Flacco is really earning a key to the Ravens vault if he keeps this up.

Who cares about Moss.
Jeez this game was Kapearnik against the world.
Well he failed.

The Ed Reed's won this game.
The better team won, though i could or wanted to hang that ravens kicker.
Got the Niners back in it.
After that one he killed it.

Glad to see a Defense win the game.

Ravens!

Final score:  Ravens 34 Niners 31

Ravens QB Joe Flacco named game MVP.

The San Francisco 49ers nearly mounted what would have been the greatest comeback in SuperBowl history.  The momentum surely shifted after that power outage as until then, the Ravens had compiled a 28-6 lead.

San Fran's QB Colin Kaepernick's three incomplete passes at the Ravens' 5 yd. line in the last few minutes (make that seconds) of play confounded even the most ardent of 49ers fans.  Kaepernick amassed a total of over 307 yds. and was 16/28 in passing completions.  Kaepernick's  62 yard run made it into the SuperBowl record books

Baltimore's QB Flacco shredly utilized all of the Ravens offence, amassing a total 192 yds. and was 13/20 in passing completions and threw three touchdowns in the process.  Far fewer yardage and passing but more accurately and precisely done than his rival Kaepernick.

This was Baltimore's second SuperBowl triumph in 11 years, and Ravens' superstar Ray Lewis' swan song.

A very exciting SuperBowl game indeed.

Congrats to both teams.

And very Prince-ly cornerback...NYGiants Prince Amukamara is descended from a Royal Nigerian family...

Anyone else see this wacky story coming out of the NFL combine?

Lauren Silberman, a 28 year old soccer player who's never played football in her life, was invited to try out. She promptly kicked off twice with kicks totaling only 13 and 19 yards before retiring with an injury.

Can you say publicity stunt? Jeez. What makes this worse is there are probably lots of women out there who have played touch or flag football and can actually kick well.

It's nice to know that no matter what happens, you can always count on the Jets and the Cowboys to be absolutely clownshoes when it comes to the draft.

My thoughts exactly, kid.
