2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Looking at the market, the only free agent I'd like to see make a major run at is Josh Hamilton. The rest . . . well, there's 3 or 4 similar guys out there at every position, or there's one guy who's going to get seriously overpaid because there's no real competition for him (like Greinke - a #2 who is going to get paid like an ace).

I agree on the Greinke thing, but there are still guys available that can help the Jays.

I'm actually intrigued by two guys who had their options declined: Travis Hafner and Kevin Youklis.  I think both could vastly improve the DH position, provide some veteran leadership, and play a little corner infield.

Youk could be interesting, though he's injury prone and you probably don't get much more than 120 or so games out of him. Hafner's even worse in that area - only once in the last 5 seasons has he played at least 100 games.

I don't care how you look at this, it sends a bad message to fans that your manger and best coaches got poached by a division rival. It further accentuates the small-market mantra that I HATE. Toronto is the 4th largest market in the league and Rogers are the RICHEST owners in the league aside from Nintendo in Seattle.

As for free agents, the guys I go after are Shaun Marcum and Kyle Lohse. Sanchez hasn't put up very good regular season numbers in a weaker division, Edwin Jackson is just a sub-.500 guy, and Dempster is getting old.  I also might want to try and take a flyer on Dan Haren providing he comes for cheaper, though I have a feeling he's not going to want to come to Toronto.

The angels are actively looking to move Wells, who is still owed 42 million over the next 2 years.

I'm still amazed that Alex was able to dump him.

I'd say he's even harder to move now. At least, in 2 out of his last 3 seasons as a Jay, he looked like a decently productive player that just wasn't worth his impending salaries. His two seasons in Anaheim have been awful.

Whoever mentioned Redman (current, or should I say former, Jays A level coach) as a potential candidate for the Jays job wins a double double.  He's just been hired by the Marlins to replace Guillen.

I'm slightly puzzled too unless AA Feels he'll contribute to the rotation. I don't know, hard to judge this until all the chips fall.

Yeah. I mean, on the face of it, it's really just two bench/role player types for a bullpen arm - it's just that, right now, I'd say the Jays' bullpen is more complete than their infield, so . . .

That's where I'm at, busta... Far more important areas to address than the pen but like I said, the chips need to fall here before I can sat whether or not I like this deal... I don't hate it now.

I don't really have a strong opinion about the deal either way in terms of value, etc. I just find it curious. It may end up making more sense in the context of everything else the team does in the offseason, but, right now, it's kind of confusing.

I don't know much about him except from his numbers. Started some games in Colorado, had an ERA over 6 until he came to the Indians last year and dropped it to around 3. I'm thinking AA is banking on him continuing with the AL numbers from last season.

AA's gone on record saying that he thinks you can never have too many relievers. Seems like he had an opportunity to pick one up at a price he liked and he went for it.

Reports have said the Red Sox gave the option of Andrew Bailey or Mike Aviles.

Unless the Jays know something we don't about Bailey's injury history...why didn't we take Bailey if we ended up getting a reliever anyways? Furthermore, who's going to play 2B now? I'm not comfortable with only Hech there, we need a supersub type guy that can start if needed.

It just strikes me as more of the same from AA.  Trade a couple of guys for a reclamation project arm and hope he ends up being effective.

The Jays don't have a bench, they dont' have a manager, a 2B, a 1B, a LF and at least two SP.  But his opening gambit is adding yet another reliever.

This is a big HUGE off-season for the Jays. We need everything you listed and more. It's time for AA and Rogers to put their money where their mouth is.

This trade alone doesn't mean he's not working on everything else.

He'll have to be creative this year to be competitive but AA loves to keep a tight lid on things, which is why we're not hearing more about the managerial search and his quest to fill the various holes on the roster.

You are right.  It doesn't mean that he isn't working on those things.  But he damn sure better deliver on them.

In other news, Haren's a free agent. Hopefully AA will take a run at him. He has pitched 200+ innings 7 times, with a career WHIP of 1.18 and a 3.66 ERA. Maybe, just maybe, other teams will too focused on the Greinke bidding and the possible availability of Shields that Haren will fly under the radar. I doubt it, but I can dream.
