2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

I'm outraged that AA's first move of the off-season wasn't trading for the 7 different holes on the team's roster in one fell swoop. I'm sure a 26 player, 9 team trade was out there.

Just heard on Sportsnet that Rogers threw 1459 pitches (most by any reliever in the majors.) - I haven't bothered to check their homework but apart from being cheap and under control for a while, we know he throws hard and appears to be rather durable so hey, at the end of the day, he's got a chance of being more serviceable to the Jays than Avlies might have been.  :-\

Edit: Assuming you believe Aviles is a bench player of course. Also, Frasor and Lyon might be on the way out too so hey, why not?

John Lott posted this link to how Rogers' fits in to the rest of the bullpen: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2012&month=0&season1=2010&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=11827,1906,4241,1312,206,6317,7355&sort=16,d

Just saw this on Yahoo - apparently Art Howe may be interested in the Jays' coaching position.
There's lots of very experienced former managers that haven't made the radar, Art Howe is just one of them.

How about Jim Riggleman, Mike Hargrove, Phil Garner, or Buddy Bell? All have years of experience with multiple teams.

Word is the Jays are about to sign Maicer Izturis to a 3 year, $10M deal. Izturis isn't exactly the biggest offensive threat, but, he's a reliable bat who plays solid defence and can play 2B, 3B and SS.

They have also acquired RHP Jeremy Jeffress from the Royals for cash.

FWIW, in the 29 games he played at 2B last year (20 as a starter) his FLD% is an impressive 1.000. Small sample but as you said, it's proof he's got some leather.

Yeah. I mean, he's not going to wow anyone with his defence, but, he's reliable out there and doesn't commit a lot of errors.

He also gets on base quite a bit more than Aviles and at about the same rate as KJ (last year, Iztures was slightly better.)

I can live with him in the 9-hole.

Remember when Jays fans were criticizing the Aviles trade for the Cleveland reliever? Ha. Obviously we'd much rather have Izturis, who could very well be better than Aviles, and Rogers than just Aviles.

Izturis' offense is nothing to write home about but he hits for decent average and steals a good chunk of bases. He also has added value as a utility guy who can effectively play 3rd, SS, or 2nd. He's not bad at all as a 9th hitter in the order, and he'd be great as a super-sub bench player if Hech impresses enough to grab the starting job at 2B.

The Jays also signed reclamation project Jeremy Jeffress, who could be quite good if we control his control so to say. We also signed some more depth adding SP/RP Justin Germano to the fray on a minor league contract. Overall, a good start the off-season for AA. Now if only he can go out this winter and get a couple of good starting pitchers and fill holes at LF and 1B/DH.

I don't know about that. Aviles and Izturis are pretty similar players(career 94 OPS+ for Izturis, 92 for Aviles, defensive metrics have slight edge for Aviles) and the Jays threw Gomes into the deal and he might have a future as a utility guy himself.

Right now it just looks like stacking bodies.

It's certainly not a bad acquisition.  My concern is mostly that it is more of the same for the Jays.  Trading for controllable players and signing guys to cheap affordable contracts.  It's great if it means that money is spent on pitching, but time will tell on that one.  As long as Izturis is hitting 8th/9th its a decent option.  He won't get on base all the time, but with decent speed and considerably less strike-out tendency, he'll at least be a guy who makes the bottom of the order a factor in the game from time to time.

Rumour has it the Jays are close to acquiring Josh Johnson. There's the front of the rotation guy they need - if he can stay healthy.

Ken_Rosenthal: Buerhle headed to #BlueJays along with Josh Johnson, sources tell me and @jonmorosi.

Ken_Rosenthal: Yunel Escobar and Hechavarria part of package going from #BlueJays to #Marlins. Monster deal.

jonmorosi: One source tells me Jose Reyes is expected to go to Toronto, as well. This is not a joke.

I . . . ummm . . . wow.

Johnson, Buehrle and Reyes in one .... trade......?

Holy Moses.  :o

edit:.. will we see Romero's name in this deal before it's done?

Definitely a big step in dealing with the rotation. Escobar leaving this winter was pretty much a  given after the slur on face incident. Hechavarria being included is a bit of a surprise, but, if Reyes is in fact coming to TO, understandable. I'm concerned about what else the Jays may have given up here, but, this is a franchise altering type of trade.

jonmorosi: Source: Justin Nicolino is going to the #Marlins.

Nicolino is a very well thought of pitching prospect in the Jays system, so, that stings a little.

jonmorosi: One source told me Johnson, Buehrle, Reyes, Buck and Bonifacio are all going to #BlueJays. I am working to confirm this. @MLBONFOX

jonmorosi: I would expect the #Marlins to get one of the #BlueJays outfield prospects, too.

If Buck is involved, it could mean Arencibia is heading to Miami.

EDIT: jonmorosi: John Buck's inclusion in the deal is mostly for cash purposes, since #BlueJays have an abundance of catching depth already.
