2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

On the plus side, unless I have the wrong info on MLB's tie-breaking procedure in terms of the draft order (as far as I know, the team with the worse record the previous season gets the higher pick), the Jays have the 9th overall pick in the 2014 draft - which means they can sign free agents that received QOs without sacrificing their 1st round pick. It also means they have 2 picks in the top 11.

This is good.  IF they can draft guys they can actually sign.

#phillies GM Ruben Amaro deep in serious talks w #bluejays to acquire OF Jose Batista. Can also play 3rd. Phils would deal OF Dom Brown plus

No idea if this guy has any credibility whatsoever though.

Anthopoulos speaks on a number of issues -- the Jays interest in Robinson Cano, free agency signings, probable trades, etc.,

What will the Jays do with Arencibia?  Trade him or move him?...

It's going to be an interesting free agency signing period for AA, particularly since he reiterated his "five year maximum contract" policy.

This is just like when Burke proclaimed he wouldn't go over 5 years on a player.  I get the idea and principle behind it.  But man, you're completely taking yourself out of some highly talented potential suitors for your team with a thing like this.

JonHeymanCBS: just to clear something up, #blueJays arent trading jose bautista for dom brown. not even close.

Teams are asking the Jays about Bautista, obviously. I mean, that's what happens at this time of year. I'm sure the Phillies are among those teams, but, I'm not sure they actually have the pieces to make a major deal right now. They've emptied out their farm system with the big deals they've made over the past few seasons.

Yeah I just read someone on Twitter mentioning the lack of credibility of that guy.

It didn't really make sense for either team.

Well it's not like they'd have to empty their farm team for Bautista. I know he has a nice name and all but Bautista is 32, his numbers have steadily declined since his big year and he has had significant DL time the last two years. Brown just turned 26 and had similar power numbers to Bautista last year. Heck their OPS' were not that far off from each other either. Not that I am for a straight up swap, mind you, but the idea that Bautista should fetch far more than Brown+ is a little crazy imo.

I think a Bautista trade though should do at lease a couple of things for you though. Just replacing him for someone cheaper/younger doesn't make a lot of sence to me. Now, if you could spin Bautista into a cheaper/younger suitable replacement plus say a legit starter, or catcher, or 2B, great.

Exactly, if an overpaid starter and a young, controllable power bat come back, that would enable AA to overspend on a free agent, I would think.

In other words:

Brown, Lee (just sayin') + Shoo / Elsbury / ??? > Bautista
