2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Geez, Doug Fiuster gets traded from the Tigers to the Nationals for a good (not great) young pitching prospect, a decent relief pitcher, and a Maicer Izturis facsimilie utility infielder.  I don't pretend to know how GMs work, but this seems to me like a tremendous opportunity that Anthopolous has missed out on.  I mean, Doug Fister is the exact type of pitcher that they needed to target through trade (plus sign one of the better free agents), and the acquisition cost on this one seems absolutely reasonable.

Looks like the Jays have cut bait and non-tendered JPA. He's now a free agent, and, I'd say he's unlikely to return to the Jays - though, stranger things have happened.

Good riddance, this guy's whining was comparable to Vince Carter's, at least Carter had some talent. JPA's stats were horrific both offensively and defensively. It made me sick how happy this guy seemed all the time while personally sucking and the team losing. This team needs a culture change.

I wouldn't say he went all Vince Carter on us, other than talking publicly too much.  JPA's mistake was engaging media guys via twitter, getting defensive over their criticisms of him.  Carter just whined about all kinds of things and admitted he quit on the team.

For all of JPA's warts, he was a big community guy and I think to a degree that needs to be respected.  I think he was a good guy who meant well and it just went awry when he got too emotional about the criticisms.

It's likely that Dombrowski values the prospects he got from the Nationals much more than you do. The middle infield prospect was likely an important piece for the Tigers, and the Jays don't really have anything to trade there. They're sort of lacking in MLB ready middle infield prospects that they can afford to move.

Yeah, you're right, and I suppose I didn't analyse the deal as well as you did.  It's just that on the surface the acquisitomn cost looked very reasonable.  Now, hopefully the Cubs are looking for similar value in return for Jeff Samardzija, because if the deal is based around Izturis, a reliever, and a decent prospect of some kind, I'd be all over that.

JPA was also a fan favourite.  One of the more popular Blue Jays off the field.

?@BlueJays The @BlueJays have traded RHP BRAD LINCOLN to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for C ERIK KRATZ and LHP ROB RASMUSSEN.?

Another catcher.

And a lefty arm who gets a lot of strikeouts and supposedly has a ridiculous slider.

The guy is 24 and was in AA last year.

That's not the end of the world. Only his 3rd pro season, must have been drafted out of college as a Sr.?

Not like I was expecting a blue chipper in return for Lincoln.  He was probably traded so Gibbons would stop using him so damned much.

Are you confusing him with another relieiver? Lincoln spent a large portion of last season in AAA.

No.

I know he wasn't up all year but when he was he seemed to be a go-to guy for Gibbons. He pitched 31 innings in 22 games.

Well, really, the entire bullpen was overworked; his numbers aren't much different.

Not that it matters; Lincoln wasn't bringing back anything special anyway (as you mentioned). Just another minor transaction to coincide with AA's minor signings.

Halladay and Blue Jays will announce a 1-day contract at press conference so he retires as a jay

Not really a big baseball fan, but that's great.

Too bad if that is the case.  He had a phenomenal career.  To me he is a HOF pitcher, but his numbers won't meet the base-stat requirement of the media.  Certainly hope he ends up there some day with the Jays as his logo.

A plague on Cooperstown if he never gets in... but he will.
