The thing with Rice though is Goodell admitted it was a mistake. Sent letters to all the owners explaining that and then suspended Rice indefinitely.. Im glad to see them throw the book at Brady... Got to treat this as an individual thing.. a guy who cheated but even worse it seems covered up and lied...
 
As someone who is simply a very casual football fan and might not even have all the details, 4 games seems like pretty ridiculous overkill. It's a quarter of the season. That's like if Ovechkin was suspended 20 games for playing with an illegal curve or if Price was suspended 20 for playing with bigger pads.

Also, I followed a bit of what that report said, but I thought it didn't even really come to a 100% conclusion that Brady was involved. Surprised they can issue a suspension of that length with that type of evidence. I'm sure this will get appealed and dropped to 2 games.
 
although really tough to totally prove, the evidence in report is pretty overwhelming...Not co-operating totally is a big issue for NFL

I think it's a lot more serious than that.  It would be like Price or Ovechkin somehow altering the pucks somehow to their advantage.  Obviously, in hockey both teams play with the same puck so it's not really a comparable situation, but you could imagine what a huge advantage it would be if somehow the puck was easier for one team to shoot, pass, receive, stickhandle etc.

Yeah I realized it wasn't exactly the same situation, still can't wrap my head around the difference being large enough to go from a 2-minute penalty to 25% of the season.

One question: how exactly did the Pats get away with this? Doesn't somebody test the balls to check?

But when the Ray Rice video came to light, Goodell said "It's not my fault, I didn't know about it."

From what I've heard, and I hope I have this correct, but the balls were locked away and the Pats training staff went in and changed the balls when the overseer of the game balls went to the washroom.  Something to that effect.

Like you, I'm nothing but a marginal football fan.  But I still can't comprehend how the NFL allows each team to doctor 15 balls to their specifications and needs.  Why the league doesn't distribute standardized game balls is beyond me.  It'd be like MLB allowing each team to do whatever they want with 50 baseballs prior to a game.

Yeah, that really seems crazy to me. I also have a very hard time believing that this isn't somewhat common in the game (which might mean I guess that the NFL was just sending the entire league a message here with the suspension).
