Bryzgalov released.

.@TOTALLUXURYLIMO I-35 Report #mnwild puts Almond & Veilleux on waivers, Fontaine on IR, releases Bryzgalov from PTO http://ow.ly/CkIul

capgeek shows he has salary through 2019-20.  Is Minnesota on the hook for that?

No Philly I believe, who bought him out.

That's still the money he's owed as part of the compliance buyout the Flyers used on him.

On the dump-n-chase (D) vs carrying (C) discussion from earlier:

When people cite the success rate of C vs D, I always want to know more.  When measuring Carry success, are you including all the breakaways, 2-on-1 s and 3-on-2s?  If those situations are included then the stat is really telling us nothing at all.

The thing we want to know is if you are contested at the blue line, should you

(1) deek and try to carry
(2) dump, or
(3) pass back soviet style and try another rush?

If all people report is the result on all carries vs all dumps, I dont think you can really tell whether you should encourage your Kadri-like players to deek or to dump and I think that is the interesting question. Everybody know you shouldnt be dumping on a 2-on-1 ...

This article from a couple of years ago actually pretty much looks at everything you brought up:

Give it a read when you have some time.

Perfect. Thanks!  The only thing I didnt see there was something akin to scoring chances against when carrying in in a contested situation.

It seemed clear that odd man rushes are sufficiently infrequent as to not disrupt the data much.

Peter Mueller on unconditional waivers...never really panned out.

It's pretty surprising that a team like Carolina or New York that lost centres wouldn't take a chance on him. Cheap contract, low risk, high reward.

Nice to see that the hockey experts / panels in this country still have zero integrity and that the almighty dollar still trumps reality. Panel members on both sides predicting a Leaf playoff appearance. Are the networks that afraid of losing viewers that they still have to pander?

It's not just an insult to the non Leaf fan watching but they obviously don't view Leaf fans as hockey fans, just Leaf fans.

And let's be perfectly clear about the Habs (the other media darlings / do no wrongs) - if Price has a bad year or is even ordinary then Montreal will be in just as much of a dog fight to make the playoffs as the other bubble teams.

IMO that's exactly what's going to happen this year with Montreal and Therrien will get fired in the process. You can quote me on that.

Who are these people, and how universal are these predictions?  I can't claim to have been watching sports TV lately, but anybody I've heard on sports radio lately is calling the Leafs to be borderline playoff team at best, and generally calling them anywhere from 7th to 12th in the conference.  But either way, playing in a weak conference in which a little more than half the teams make the playoffs, one or several below average teams are going to make the playoffs.  It's not exactly high praise to predict a team makes the playoffs.

It's really not that farfetched to believe the Leafs might snag one of the wildcard spots. They certainly have the goaltending to do it and offence to do it. The middle of the pack in the East is really wide open. While I don't think they'll make it, I wouldn't call it pandering or insulting for others to think they might. I mean, it's not like they were calling them to win the division or anything.
