2015-2016 NHL Thread

I thought I heard something about calling them the Vegas Knights, which I think isn't bad Nights is better ... We don't need two teams called the Hawks, that is clear ...

Apparently the original plan was for them to be the Black Knights but West Point, who calls their teams the Black Knights and who Foley was trying to honor/emulate, said no. Also, apparently the NHL has said they don't want any gambling-related nicknames.

And, the Las Vegas Flush had so much potential . . .

I propose the Las Vegas Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy Owls.

Team confirmed our list last night, now hearing LasVegas has eliminated all 3 Hawks names & chosen something else. Didn't like fan response?

Thank god.

You'd think the league would have something to say about another team going with the hawks name. Chicago must have complained about it at some point.

Not quite a roughrider's situation, but still not good for a world class league.

Chicago really ought to change their name though; same with Washington and Kansas City's NFL teams, and Atlanta and Cleveland's MLB teams, and Edmonton's CFL team.

I don't think the Blackhawks is a huge name problem, but, rather, it's a logo issue. If they kept the name and used a black bird for their logo, there wouldn't be any real issues. The rest, however, should probably be changed (though, I'm kinda on the fence with the Chiefs - I think there's a way to use the name there without it necessarily relating to Native Americans).

The issue you run into there though is the origins of each name, why not just move on?

I think that unless we are the affected party, it really isn't up to us to say what's acceptable. They've been pretty vocal. I think we, as a collective, can do better.

Well, in their case, the origin of the name is similar to the Maple Leafs - their named after an infantry division (who, admittedly, earned their nickname from a Native American chief).

Word is their three new considerations are the Oak Leafs, Elm Leafs or Cactus Leafs.
