2015-2016 NHL Thread

Yeah, and while it's not a foregone conclusion I think they keep the pick and take a forward. Basically everybody has Tkachuk/Dubois ranked over the defencemen, and those two are a specific type of forward that Edmonton doesn't have yet (and that Chiarelli covets). So I don't think they'll believe taking a forward there is crazy.

I don't doubt you're right about that but, if that's true, that really means they have to trade at least two of RNH, Hall or Eberle, right? Maybe not immediately but you're not going to have McDavid, Dubois/Tkachuk, Draisaitil and two other forwards signed to big money deals, are you?

You gotta think that RNH is a goner eventually. All the rumours were that the Oilers were trying hard to move him for Jones if I remember correctly. Can't imagine he'll stick around there for the next 3 seasons. And I'm assuming that they keep Tkachuk/Dubois in junior for 1 more season, so that'll buy a little more ELC time there for the Oilers to figure out their cap situation.

Anyone else think that this new rule that other teams can talk to pending UFA's as of day two of the draft, is a bit of a misstep?

Seems like something that would take some of the spotlight from the draft. Perhaps they'll roll that into the coverage with more insider trading type segments?

The date of the draft does change each year I suppose...

I think that might be an inside the bubble sort of problem. Unless you're a complete nut like most of us here the second day of the NHL draft is going to get next to no attention regardless.

I think as a policy it's just recognizing what goes on anyway.

The meeting period for UFAs last year actually started a day before the 1st round of the draft, and I don't really remember any news or such coming from it. It certainly didn't distract from the draft itself.

Although, again, last year's UFA crop was pretty terrible. Even if Franson had signed that day it wouldn't be huge news. Stamkos or Lucic signing might be different.

True, but this is just a talking period. You're not even technically allowed to be get into any actual contract specifics during this period (although let's be real...). The only information that will probably come out of this would be that so and so talked to this many teams or Lucic spoke with Edmonton for 2 hours. And that won't exactly be breaking news.

Yeah, I guess I'm just a little influenced by the NBA's similar sort of system where there's a stretch of time where nothing can be officially signed but teams are allowed to talk to players and reports of deals being done happen every year. I didn't know that there were rules against what you were allowed to talk about but I guess that would at least mean nobody would leak a completed deal.

Man, Jim Benning sure isn't Lou Lamoriello. This guy will literally answer any question someone asks him.

So basically no chance of dealing with them because it'll just be blabbed :(

Yeah, I think with the level of interest in the Stamkos sweepstakes and the Leafs in general having just drafted Matthews, that networks who struggled for ratings this year might be open to another opportunity to grab viewers by building this FA talks insider schtick into their broadcasts.

Interestingly, according to generalfanager, although his cap hit would have been $6.5, he was owed $7.5m real money in 16-17.

So I can see why no-one wanted to touch that.

Just piggybacking on this, does anyone else think that Detroit might actually get something decent in return for Datsyuk from a budget team?

I think being able to lower the floor by $7.5 million and not actually pay a penny in real dollars, might sound extremely interesting for a small market team.

I floated that earlier in the week, but most don't think anyone is going to flirt with the floor this season.
