2015 MLB ALDS - Texas Rangers (88-74) @ Toronto Blue Jays (93-69)

3 runs in 3 innings... Not really that impressive.

8 runs in 10 innings I think for price? Not really what I expected from him.

Yeah disappointing no doubt. And there's really no chance he's there for game 5 now.

In other news, Sanchez has been awesome this series; he and Pillar might be the 2 best players for the Jays thus far.

Price's line looks terrible. 3ip 3runs 2ks 6 hits.

Thems Hutchinson numbers.

Don't get me wrong I'm thrilled there's a game 5. I'm just surprised at price's results.

Our results have turned around since the hitters started going back to just making solid contact, or taking walks, vs trying to pull homeruns with every AB.

Here's my attempt at making sense of using Price today.  Like pretty much everybody else, I was both surprised and baffled at throwing Price in today.  However, I can rationalize it this way:

Gibbons/management are happier with what they've been seeing from Stroman than they're seeing with Price.  Furthermore, Price has had less than mediocre playoff results in his career.  By using Price in a low leverage situation today, they they attempt to help him get some playoff confidence (yeah, that probably didn't end up working...), get him a "win" (though Dickey clearly deserved it more than he did), and they set it up so Price won't be the Game 5 starter without directly snubbing him (and further rattling his confidence) as their supposed ace for the Game 5 start.

I didn't hear any of Gibbons' post-game conference, so I don't know what he had to offer on the decision, though if any or all of the above were of consideration, he can't really publicly acknowledge it without making Price look bad.

Of all the various reasons why Gibbons might or might not make a decision in the post-season, I really hope "who gets the win" is at the very bottom of the list, below things like Astrological Charts and Numerology.

78 pitches. Pitching well. Not in any trouble. Gibbons takes Dickey out with 2 outs in the 4th, not allowing him to get the win. Seems cruel and unnecessary. Doesn't make any sense, either.

Part of lineup coming up that hit Dickey well already and not wanting to risk letting them back into the game, especially with a pitcher susceptible to HR.

The decision to go with Price out of the bullpen has to be something that was talked about beforehand. As long as Price buys in, then I don't think there should be any animosity, but you have to wonder if this will be construed as a lack of confidence in his ability, which could quite possibly affect his decision this winter.

Also when they hit the homeruns.

It also coincided with two pitchers who don't have great movement on their pitches.  Gallardo and Hamel were doing a good job of keeping balls to the outside but they were also having movement away from the plate.  I'm not sure that the Jays beating up on two bad pitchers necessarily guarantees a hot start on Wednesday.  Hopefully it's the case but no guarantee.
