2016-2017 NHL Thread

Figured it was about time to start this as it seems like most of what we're talking about pertains to the upcoming season and not the previous one.

Here is the league's schedule:

https://www.nhl.com/schedule

And here's an interesting article that relates to something we've talked about in the past, the NHL's bizarre lack of interest in creating a Capgeek/General Fanager style website:

Gary Bettman vs. NHL Salary Cap Websites

Some reports that Nichushkin is close to a KHL deal.

He's a 21 year old RFA.  4g 25a last season.

Dallas is at $69m, and he's their only significant RFA according to generalfanager.com.

It's 9 g and 20 a, actually. And that was with not much in the way of PP time or even strength time.

He's an interesting prospect. Size and some offensive ability.

If Dallas is close to losing him, I wonder if he is someone you can get for a handful of quarters.

Make that 2 ex-Leafs who won't be ready for training camp:

Arthur Staple ‏@StapeNewsday
Mikhail Grabovski won't speak to the media here today, not cleared due to concussion symptoms. Also not cleared to skate.

Concussions have really hurt Grabbo's career. Too bad.

And one more current Leaf joins that pool.

Lupul returned to Toronto from his off-season home on Sept. 13. Sometime during the last week, it?s believed Lupul underwent a physical examination by Maple Leaf doctors and indications are Lupul was notified he is unfit to play and will be placed on the injured reserve list to begin the season.

Lupul was asked to comment via text message Wednesday and replied he will address the media on Thursday. He has not skated with the group of Maple Leafs informally preparing for training camp daily at the MasterCard Centre.

Lou had his legs broken.

The World Cup of Hockey?s pool play wraps up Thursday, and generally speaking, it has been a success.

One of the big drivers of this success has been Team North America ? a roving band of young Canadian and American players who compete at a blistering, hyper-aggressive pace. Their style of play has earned plaudits from all corners of the sport ? mostly, I presume, because it?s the type of entertaining product that all fans can embrace.

Another, perhaps less noticeable element of the World Cup of Hockey: the rough stuff just hasn?t been there. This is a trend we tend to see in international hockey because of restrictive rules with major penalties, including fighting. Teams of varying competencies have simply gone out and played skill against skill. For the most part, fans have embraced it.

Yes please.

Yost notes that fighting has gradually declined as speed and skill are beginning to take precedent in team builds. He also notes that boarding instances have drastically decreased.

What we're seeing here, I believe, are the grassroots changes in the feeder systems that are producing a majority of the players entering the league these past few years. Stop signs on the backs of sweaters, super harsh anti-fighting rules, all geared towards protecting the players and letting them just play. Even if the NHL is run by dinosaur-executives, progress will not stop.

Steen extended after this seasonfor $5.75m X 4 years.

Alex Steen is 32 years old.  Man, I'm getting old.

Yet another former Leaf has failed a physical: Jiri Tlusty has been released from his PTO with the Avalanche.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/jacob-troubas-agent-says-client-requested-trade/
Kurt Overhardt, agent for unsigned Winnipeg defenceman Jacob Trouba, released a statement Friday indicating his client wants to be traded.

?Our client, Jacob Trouba, will not be attending the Winnipeg Jets NHL training camp. Since May, we have been working with the Jets management in an effort to facilitate a trade of Jacob?s rights. Both parties continue to work on this matter."

Danger zone!

I picked up a ticket to the Leafs game at Madison Square Garden in January. Very excited about seeing the Leafs, obviously, but almost as excited about seeing an event in an iconic arena.

Has anyone been and is it a decent place to watch?

Clarke MacArthur's out with another concussion as he was drilled into the boards by some no-name sen during a training camp scrimmage:

Mac's of course had a history with concussions, but seemed to have come into camp this year healthy. Absolutely brutal, I always really liked Mac.

Edmonton's new mascot, Hunter:

Artemi Panerin is apparently looking for big money after his big year:

Panerin wants 6m per season on new deal

Something to keep in mind re: guys like Zaitsev. The NHL has done a good job via the restrictive RFA rules to convince young guys they don't deserve open market prices. Guys from the KHL might buy into that a little less.
