Never change, Randy. Never change.
Lest we forget. Leafs were in a playoff position when he got fired. Followed by a Horachek 8-28 to end the season.

The analytics community predicted that fall from grace, based on a statistic called CGO.

It's the sum of a team's Compete level and it's Grit level. The Leaf's had a CGO of 106, which was never going to be sustainable.
Don't forget the PTTB (pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence) statistic, the Leafs were only playing at 2568 click on PTTB scale and that wasn't going to cut it. One of the main reason's they had the collapse.

So Travis Konecny is apparently having a pretty darn good training camp. 3 goals, 3 assists in 5 preseason games. Sounds like he has a real solid chance at cracking the Flyers line-up.

Also, NHL, why the heck did I have to go to FoxSports.com to find preseason statistics?

Further to my Konecny post, it looks as though Ivan Provorov will also make the Flyers. So both their first round picks from last year will be jumping into the NHL.

The Islanders also have 2 first rounders from that draft making their club: Mathew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier (while Griffin Reinhart can't even crack the Oilers roster at the age of 22, what an underrated steal for the Islanders).

A couple of defencemen from the 2016 draft: Mikhail Sergachev (MTL) and Jakob Chychrun (ARI), have made their respective teams.

I get the sense there'll be a lot of "Why couldn't we trade up for Chychrun" angst this year.

And probably some "Man we really should have picked Konecny instead of trading down".

Yeah, well, those people will be eating their words when Travis Dermott is playing 18 reasonably good minutes a night in three years.

Bracco and Dzierkals too. While I'm pretty high on Konecny, at the time of that draft, I believe it was the right move to prioritize quantity and trust the scouts.

Bracco would've been on the Marlies if they weren't already stuffed to the gills with players.

Personally I didn't include Konecny only because, and brace yourself for this scorching hot take, I really don't think a narrative we're going to be seeing this season is "Boy, I wish the Leafs had some good young forwards".

So apparently Devin Setoguchi is about to finalize his contract with the Kings. This is their projected line-up to start the season:

Setoguchi-Kopitar-Brown
Purcell-Carter-Toffoli
King-Dowd-Lewis
Clifford-Andreoff-Nolan

That looks... pretty bad right? Gaborik is already injured, and they lost Lucic, Versteeg, and Lecavalier from their team last year. They have 3 legitimate top-6 forwards healthy, and their bottom 6 is filled with scrubs/grinders. Dean Lombardi's season didn't start off very well with the World Cup debacle... it might not get much better.

edit: Even their defence looks pretty underwhelming:

Muzzin-Doughty
McNabb-Martinez
Forbort-Greene

Like sure the top pairing is amazing and all, but McNabb, Forbort, and Greene are all your typical big, limited, stay at home defencemen types.

You don't have Tanner Pearson in there. I think he gives them a pretty good top 6 but, yeah, other than that it's not great.

Ah, I had a feeling that I was missing somebody. Took that from DailyFaceoff, apparently Pearson got suspended for something in the preseason.

The entire Oilers broadcast has basically been an advertisement for their new building. I know it's unrealistic given their business relationship but you wish sportsnet would retain some sort of journalistic integrity.

So Laine get his first plus a helper...
Pulju scored in his debut as well.
Dubois was released.

Matthews 4G, Laine 1G, 1A, Pulju 1G.
