Huh?

I couldn't believe it either.  I mean I knew he was doing well, but I didn't realize he was top of the league.

And Backstrom is 6th in the league in points. I just don't think this guy gets the recognition he deserves.

Yeah, that's especially surprising considering Ovi is on pace to have his 2nd worst season offensively of his career.

I was also surprised to learn recently that Malkin is 2nd in Pts/game this season, right behind Crosby. It'd be pretty cool if they finished tied for the Art Ross.

Phil!

Why don't playoff games count in your rookie status as a player?  Matt Murray is still a rookie this year despite the fact he played 34 games in the NHL last season (13 regular season + 21 playoffs).

The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League

To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league.

I mean I get the argument that the Calder is for the regular season, and he's only played 13 regular season games, but he has 34 NHL games total experience, so it hardly seems right that he should still be considered a rookie.  An argument can be made that he played more than "25 games in any single preceding season" since the playoffs are an extension of the season.  But whatever.

That's an interesting question. I don't have an immediate answer other than I guess the Calder is about measuring guys over the course of a real NHL season and the playoffs, while they are a unique and beneficial experience, aren't really reflective of the regular season?

Oh my.

If all the other players were digitally edited out, I could be persuaded that it was a creative shootout attempt.  He just went right down the middle.

There was also this earlier in the game:

Goes five-hole for practice.

Alternate caption: there's more than one way to split the D.

DET VS COL 20 years later.

Still boils the blood to watch, an epic time in hockey.
