2016-2017 NHL Thread

Between Giroux and Schenn it seems like the top 2 center spots aren't really that much of a need area.

Yeah, I don't quite get the need either...Brayden Schenn looks to have turned out to be a pretty decent 2C over the past couple of seasons.

Same. They could some help on the wing, and some improved depth, but between Giroux, Schenn, and Couturier, they're in pretty good shape down the middle. Of course, what they need more than anything is a quality goalie, but, I mean, that's old news for the Flyers.

Schenn's spent a lot of time on the wing the past couple of seasons. I think the Flyers like him there better.

They may well prefer that. That does sort of stretch the concept of "need" though. Especially if Patrick goes first and then you have to wonder if Hischier is a C long term himself.

For what it's worth I'm not saying the Flyers will or should trade the pick. I just don't know if there's an obvious fit between what they may want short term and what may be available to them.

Exactly. And, if they're really looking for someone who can step in immediately, the surest way to find that is through a trade. I'm not saying they'll necessarily move the pick, either. Just that, out of the teams drafting in the top 5, they feel like the most likely to put that pick in play for an immediate fix.

Schenn plays wing on the 3rd line that Couturier centers.  Filppula is our stop gap 2C (1 year contract), & Giroux's game has been in slow decline.

Schenn took almost 500 faceoffs this year and his most common 5 on 5 linemates were Simmonds and Weise.

Hextall has shown incredible patience with his picks & hasn't rushed any to the NHL.  This season's #2 pick should be the exception.

The late part of the season after Filppula arrived, he was on the 3rd line with Couturier as C.  There are no plans for him to move back to C...with Giroux & Filppula occupying 1C & 2C.

Sure, I can just repeat that "we need a #2 C because we're choosing to use the one we have at wing" is stretching the definition of need if you like.

Either way though, you're still left with the very real question of whether or not Hischier presents them with a short term solution at that position. This isn't McDavid/Eichel here or even Tavares/Duchene.

Benning #TSN1410: I tell our guys we want European skill with North American heart. We want skilled players, defensemen that can move puck

How on earth is this guy still employed as a GM of a NHL team?

edit: for some context, he was specifically referring to his draft plans. You know, the same draft plans that led the Canucks to drafting Jake Virtanen over Nylander.

Someone's not getting any Valentine's Day cards...

Also: how awesome is it that the Leafs garbage overpaid core that would never win a championship is meeting in the Eastern Conference Finals?

Together. And they never will.

You don't know that. Maybe they're part of a fantastic bowling team!

It's nice to see them doing well, but it's as the 2nd-tier pieces that they were all along.

OMG I forgot that their inept coach and sieve of a goalie are also in contention to play in the Finals.

reporterchris: Projected 2017-18 NHL salary cap: $73M-$77M, depending on if NHLPA exercises 5% inflator.

reporterchris: The NHL is willing to leave the salary cap flat next season, which would lower players' escrow payments. They meet with NHLPA next week.
