The ballot from the Sharks SB Nation afiliate:

Connor McDavid (C, Edmonton Oilers)
Auston Matthews (C, Toronto Maple Leafs)
Nikita Kucherov (RW, Tampa Bay Lightning)
Matt Murray (G, Pittsburgh Penguins)
Mark Scheifele (C, Winnipeg Jets)
Patrik Laine (RW, Winnipeg Jets)
David Pastrnak (RW, Boston Bruins)
Johnny Gaudreau (LW, Calgary Flames)
Jack Eichel (C, Buffalo Sabres)
Leon Draisaitl (C, Edmonton Oilers)
Aleksander Barkov (C, Florida Panthers)
Mitch Marner (RW, Toronto Maple Leafs)
William Nylander (RW, Toronto Maple Leafs)
Filip Forsberg (LW, Nashville Predators)
Zach Werenski (D, Columbus Blue Jackets)
Jacob Trouba (D, Winnipeg Jets)
Hampus Lindholm (D, Anaheim Ducks)
Jonathan Drouin (LW, Montreal Canadiens)
Nikolaj Ehlers (LW, Winnipeg Jets)
Jonathan Huberdeau (LW, Florida Panthers)
Alex Galchenyuk (C, Montreal Canadiens)
Seth Jones (D, Columbus Blue Jackets)
Aaron Ekblad (D, Florida Panthers)
Brandon Saad (LW, Chicago Blackhawks)
Sean Monahan (C, Calgary Flames)

They have Nylander and Marner back to back in the Top 15.  Twitter-sphere is going to have a fit (most of who I follow on the analytics side didn't think those two should be in the Top 25) if they end up that high in the overall list.

Is Hampus Lindholm that much better than Rielly? I remember reading an article by Tyler Dellow on the Athletic indicating he believed that Rielly was underrated and had some of the stiffest competition of anyone last year.

Rielly is better offensively; Lindholm is better defensively (without being a slouch at offense).

Edit: what Coco-puffs said.

Well, Rielly not being on the list and Lindholm being on the list doesn't mean he's THAT much better. Rielly probably falls just outside the Top 30 under 25 players IMO.  Comparing the two:

- I will limit offensive comparisons to 5-on-5 only, because PP time varies pretty wildly for both of them.
- Lindholm had two great offensive years in 2013-14 and 2014-15 (26 and 28 pts 5-on-5 respectively) but has since tailed off (12 and 15 pts 5-on-5).
- Rielly has been more consistent in his 5-on-5 production (15, 20, 27, 22)
(Last year, he had a low shooting percentage).
- Rielly also shoots the puck at a higher rate (466 shots vs 582 shots in 302/312 games respectively)
- Slight edge to Rielly offensively.

- Defensively, Lindholm definitely outclasses Rielly.  While Lindholm's star percentage is lower, he still plays quite a bit against the other teams top 2 lines (and starts alot in the defensive zone), and his shot share relative to teammates is Top 5 in the NHL last year.  Rielly is middle of the pack in terms of shot share relative to teammates (although, the often sheltered Gardiner definitely hurts him on the CF%relTM).

Already ranked:

18. Jones
19. Ehlers
20. Parayko
21. Lindholm
22. Saad
23. Monahan
24. Drouin

The "locks" aren't in a real order I just essentially used FearTheFin's rankings for them.

So, 3 spots are open. I'm fairly certain we'll see Marner and Nylander take 2 of them. I was wondering who the 3rd might be and Vasilevskiy's name popped into my head as someone who I didn't think of earlier.

edit: Or possibly (and maybe more likely) John Gibson.

Ok, it's not John Gibson as he was named in the HM sections (which I just added). I'm a little surprised at that one seeing as how he actually had a better save percentage than Murray this past season (albeit by just 0.001%)

NyMarnThews is a Toronto Maple Leafs.

Anyways, all that to say all three probably deserve to be more on the honorable mentions list or 20-25 range than in the Top 20 at this point.

You wonder, though, that if the reason some deserving guys didn't at least get a HM was because they wanted to create some suspense about who'd be on the list.

So, uh, this happened....

https://twitter.com/GarretHohl/status/892919485962764288

David Johnson has scrubbed his tweets going back to 2014.  Any ideas who hired them?

I'm sure this isn't true but it sure feels like these guys are getting hired just so the public doesn't have the information to call these GM's dopes.

I hope Montreal got David Johnson.

Why do you say that?  Seems he riled up a bunch of other analytics people on Twitter quite often, but I thought his counter-points to most of what people were saying were refreshing even if I didn't always agree with him.

If you are thinking him going to Montreal would hurt the team because his opinion was counter to many others on Twitter, I don't think that would be true.

They dumped their analytics guy for the Weber tirade, so I thought having someone who is an analyst that views the game similar to the club would be right in line with their apparent game plan.

His counterpoints were almost always a) goal-metrics based; or b) didn't see the need to apply statistical rigour. It's old school hockey in mathematical clothing.

Now that he's in Calgary, he can hate on Klefbom properly.

Carrie Underwood's husband retired from hockey today.

Tyler Bozak to the rescue?

Bozak for Girard! I mean I don't think Tyler gets moved but that would alleviate our logjam on the wing:

Marleau-Matthews-Hyman
Komarov-Kadri-Brown
JVR-Nylander-Marner

The right side there is fairly interchangeable of course.

Dang it, I now have elevated expectations.

Edit: I am now reminded that they ponied up for Nick Bonino already.
And now I'm wondering if they make a play for Kessel... they have what the Penguins need.
