Pens picking up Reaves, and everyone chasing guys like Russell, Alzner, Methot, Girardi... copying the Leafs free agency moves from last year, eh?

This notion is popping up on Twitter already, but if Montreal gets Alzner, Tampa Bay gets Girardi, Florida continues to Tallon it up, and Ottawa continues crying into its cereal bowl by trading Phaneuf, and Boston hangs onto a fading Chara, the Leafs are looking pretty good just sitting there doing nothing.

I mean, the Leafs getting ahead in the division because other teams do stupid doesn't really improve their chances of getting out of the conference or winning the Cup, but, considering their cap situation, the mediocrity of the UFA class, the prices some of these guys are signing for already, etc., there may be wisdom is mostly standing pat this summer and sticking with smaller moves to shore up the 4th line/3rd pairing/depth.

You wonder if all you need is a better backup with the rest, apart from maybe the 4C role, as not as important for now. Mirtle mentioned that maybe the best option for the Leafs is to trade for a stud D at the trade deadline next year rather than adding pieces now.

Then again the more I think of the Hamonic trade the more I would've wanted to give up that first rounder.

Other than getting an average backup and a 4C that can carry the puck, I was pretty certain going into this next season we would be better than last year by subtraction and experience/chemistry.

It's nice that the tide seems to be going out for some teams in our division (but not all of them, as Nik noted). At the minimum, I would like to avoid these stupid UFA deals, or trades for players at the drop off point of their performance curves, and the easiest way to do that is to stand pat and assess some of their fringe players when we have the opportunity to do so (last season).

Darren Dreger‏ @DarrenDreger  11 hours ago

Chris Neil has good options and offers to play in the NHL next season.  He intends on playing and will select the right fit.

I'm seriously smarter than any GM who thinks that this is a good idea.

This really reeks of Dreger doing a favour for an agent, I'd be surprised if it was remotely true.

It'll never ever, ever, ever happen, but man imagine if a team like Nashville offer sheet'd Draisaitl for $9.8mil?

Are those first round picks lottery protected?  If not it's a huge risk to take, especially since the odds of moving up are improved.

Maybe, but at the same time we're not that far removed from stuff like this:

?Maybe he has been our most important player.?

Kyle Turris, a quiet, humble young man, certainly wasn?t talking about himself, though it was Turris who on Saturday afternoon, 8:28 into overtime in Game 5 of the Ottawa Senators-New York Rangers series, came over the Rangers blueline and, on his second try, got away a shot that somehow eluded Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

...

No, Turris?s ?most important player? was a 37-year-old veteran who had been a healthy scratch for most of the previous two months, a player who scored no goals on Saturday, tallied no assists, didn?t even get a shot on net and spent five times as much time in the penalty box as the minuscule 2:26 he was on the ice.

That would be Chris Neil of Flesherton, Ont., a sixth-round draft pick back in 1998 who has played all his 15 NHL seasons with the Ottawa Senators, this one widely believed to be his last ? at least until Saturday afternoon at Canadian Tire Centre.

...

Word went out among the Ottawa players late Friday evening that Neil would be in the lineup. Brassard said when he looked at his e-mail message he got ?excited.? As Brassard put it, ?I?ve never known a guy so passionate about the game.?

At the 3:13 mark of the second period, Neil went to work. The New York Rangers were up 2-1 and Glass was again offering face rubs and cheap shots at every opportunity, particularly on the much smaller Turris. Neil had had enough. He went after Glass in what turned out to be little more than a tussle. Yet it clearly had an effect on his teammates.

?It was clear we needed to answer back some of the liberties they were taking with our skill guys,? Boucher said Sunday. ?I thought they felt protected.?

Glass was given two minutes for interference, Neil two minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. He was still serving the misconduct when his teammates began their comeback. When he came out of the box, the Senators were ahead 3-2; the Ottawa players saluted him with stick taps as he made his way back across the ice.

?That?s the best penalty I?ve seen anybody take in a long time,? Turris said. ?We?ll take that any day. It gives us such a boost. It gets the crowd going.?

Neil played less than 4.5 minutes in Ottawa's entire playoff run.

If I was Erik Karlsson I'd have smacked Turris on the head and asked for a trade.

To the Leafs, for spite (and automatic victory). He also doesn't want to be embarrassed by Matthews any further.

It's pretty similar to what Matthews said/says about Martin after the whatever-the-outdoor-game-was-called. Humble stars throwing a shoutout to their loveable locker-room lumps?

One year anniverary of this:

Let's go 2017 GMs. You got pretty high standards to live up to.

I remember when the Oilers signed him to that deal, and I think the whole world thought it was bananas.

Hartnell bought out by CBJ. Could an interesting short-term 3rd/4th line piece.

I'm pretty sure Hartnell's ice-time dropped this season, but Columbus losing him and Brandon Saad this offseason is pretty surprising considering the identity of their team. Especially since Torts publicly talked about how he felt the team lost that identity during their winning streak when everything was going right for them and that ended up hurting them in the long-run.

And if the rumours are true, the fact that those two are being replaced by Panarin and maybe Kovalchuk is going to make for an interesting situation for Torts.

I love Hartnel and believe he can still contribute. He's a pest that can score, great on any checking line.

Yup. Failing a Marleau/Thornton combo, if we still end up trading JVR I'd definitely look at signing Hartnell to replace him on the left side.

Friedman just dropped a bunch of names that are being bought out:

D Ryan Murphy (CGY)
F Lance Bouma (CGY)
F Jussi Jokinen (FLA)
F Jimmy Hayes (BOS)
D Mark Stuart (WPG)
F Mike Cammalleri (NJ)
F Devante Smith-Pelly (NJ)

Yeah, but at least they had all that playoff succe...ooof.

Man I bet the GM and everybody else involved in making that decision for Boston will never work in hockey management again.

Being a fan of both the NHL and NBA this time of year is like having a lunch of saltines with your grandmother followed up by doing cocaine with supermodels.

"Do you think anyone will offer Patrick Marleau a 3rd year? And how will the Leafs address their back up goalie situation? Wait, Paul George got traded to who?!?!? Jimmy Butler for what?!?!"

McKenzie is tweeting stuff furiously and these aren't official or anything but he's reporting them as being verbal deals.

Ryan Miller to the Ducks
Steve Mason to the Jets
Bernier to the Avalanche
Brian Elliott to Philly
Chad Johnson to the Sabres
Sam Gagner and Michael Del Zotto to the Canucks
Patrick Sharp back to Chicago
