That doesn't seem like a move for someone who is about long term plans. In fact, it seems to make signing him long term more dicey. Maybe they just wanted to get him under contract to trade him? Lou pulled a 1st rounder for a goalie once with the Canucks, would you trade this year 1st rounder for Gunbrandson? Would the do it, maybe with a prospect involved as well? They wanted to get younger, and this just seemed like an odd signing unless they are waiting to get the Sedins off the books to offer him more money. But by then, you'd think the Canucks would be in full rebuild mode, and why would he want that situation as a UFA when you could play for a contender?
If I'm reading this correctly and you're suggesting we spin our 1st Rd pick (and a prospect) for Gudbranson, then I'd like to say no thanks.
slapshot said:Let me clarify a bit. Essentially what I am asking is would you do our first rounder for Gudbranson straight up? If the Canucks wanted more, would you consider throwing in a low-end prospect like Rychel or Leivo, if they aren't picked in the expansion draft. And, I should have mentioned I would only do such a deal conditionally on Gudbranson agreeing to a reasonable longer term deal like the Habs did with Drouin. He was a 3rd pick overall, has the size, grit, righthander and some offensive potential, only 25, and might thrive under Babcock.

Nik the Trik said:So Arizona has traded Mike Smith to Calgary for Chad Johnson, a prospect and a conditional 2nd/3rd. They also retain salary.

MTL: - Subban, - Sergachev, -Beaulieu
And, possibly Markov, too. I mean, the signs point to them acquiring someone else, but . . .

A few interesting names not getting qualifying offers - Burmistrov, Yakupov, Grigorenko, among others. No one that seems likely to be a real upgrade for the Leafs' roster, but some potential interesting depth signings or projects.

Matt Finn and Stuart Percy were both not qualified by their respective teams.
Those two were always why I was a little gun-shy about Travis Dermott, since I felt like they were all pretty similar defencemen. Thankfully at least Dermott's rookie season in the AHL went much better than either of theirs.
