2018-2019 Toronto Marlies Thread: Hail to the Champions...and Onwards!

Timashov's going to be a rare case of a player who will require waivers next season despite (probably) not having any NHL games played and while still being on his ELC.

Eemeil Rasanen coming to the Marlies for the rest of year.  Bought himself out of his contract with Jokerit.

Leaving the OHL was such a big misstep for him.

It was, but I guess he was pretty messed up being away from home.  Kingston flew his family out at one point because he was so homesick.  I can understand wanting to go back the European way from that perspective.

Probably but coming to the Marlies and the Leafs development team will help a lot. Hope it works out for the kid.

Ontario bus rides vs professional paycheque closer to home

I probably would?ve chosen the same thing he did.

Shows a very smart move by Rasanen to make, his development curve will be a lot steeper with the Marlies and make him potentially NHL ready much faster.

Actually playing hockey vs not playing hockey.

Anyway, I have no problem with him wanting to give professional hockey a chance. And if LK is correct and he was homesick then that makes even more sense. But thinking he could play regular minutes as a defenceman in the KHL at the age of 19 was obviously a reach. He should have tried to find a team in the SM-liiga.

I think he had an interest in working with the Jokerit coach which probably promised better development in theory.

Would running a right side of green but skilled puck moving defensemen be any worse than running a right side of slow but safe tougher defensemen? Either option is going to get walked once in awhile, but at least the former can also generate offense, non?

Rielly - Dermott
Muzzin - Holl
Rosen - Liljegren

Rasanen to the Marlies officially.

Excited to see this development as the Marlies go into the final part of their season.  And Duzak as well, boy do we need to see some light with our D.    I guess it stacks up like this right now:  Sandin or Lillypad (one or two), Hollowel, Duzak, and hopefully Rasanen will show some talent. Guess he will be working a lot with Barb Underhill as skating seems to be his weakness, but he shows a willingness for physical play and what a wingspan!

With 11 pts in his last 7 games, Sandin has tied the AHL record for an 18 year old defenseman in points with 23.

Points aren't everything in terms of what a defender's job is on the ice, but it is very promising given that Sandin has been pressed into #1LD duties with the injuries to Rosen/Borgman and the call-up of Marincin. Also note that most 18 year olds are usually not eligible for the AHL, and a memorable minority are too good to not be in the NHL, so this is a small pool of candidates to gauge against.

Some more eyeball reports on Sandin and other Marlie standouts: Bracco & Liljegren.

There's still a lot to be excited about as the Leafs continue to shed veterans by attrition, and grow the young core into leadership roles.
