2019-2020 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Makes sense.  Leafs only have 1 game left before the All-Star break and are off until the 27th.  Marlies play on the 18th, 19th, 24th and 25th, gives Moore a chance to get into some games before re-joining the Leafs.

Watching grown people be cutesy with hockey player's nicknames is like being around a couple talking baby-talk with each other.

And while I understand and appreciate the "Who cares, let people enjoy themselves how they like" sentiment this is a forum dedicated to passionate interest in the inconsequential so...par for the course.

So, Grinny, right?

Greninja.

All right you chumps, now you've gone and made me angry.  And you really shouldn't do that.

Let me explain a couple of things to you.

"Lockdown" was a brilliant nickname for Schenn.  (A) It's alliterative (twice over) with his first name, so it sounds good when you say it.  (B) It actually expressed something about his game, or at least what everyone expected his game to be ? the guy who can "lock it down."  The fact that he ended up with a so-so career, and didn't live up to that nickname, is not my fault.  (C) And, best of all, it isn't an infantile variation on either of his given names.

Which is what "Lilypad" is.  It's not funny, it's not memorable, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the player or with the game.  The image that comes to mind when you hear that word is a frog, not a hockey player.  It is stupid in every possible universe, and people who insist on using it are imbeciles.

Finally, the fact the some players may call him that just locks down my case.  8) 8) 8)  Because, as I believe Nik once so memorably said, almost all pro hockey players are dopes.

Any questions?

Let's get Down Goes Brown involved:  https://theathletic.com/1314969/2019/11/04/down-goes-brown-hockey-nicknames-are-broken-heres-how-we-fix-them/

So, a thing I?ve been wondering. The way the leafs set up in the offensive zone when a forward comes high to the middle and then the defenseman pushes down along the boards.  Structurally, it looks like the modern PP formation with one D.  So, basically, Im wondering if the formation works better on the PP and at even strength for roughly the same reason. It?s not about 1D4F vs 2D3F, it?s about the positioning in the offensive zone simply being better.

Yeah, whenever I see someone type "lilypad" or "mogen" I find it pretty cringey.

Nicknames should be clever, at least. I liked lockdown, but only when it became ironic.

Why, it's a nickname of his. No different then people using Mango, Papi, JT, Goat, CC, Sandman.

It's not a nickname of his. It's a nickname that's used by a small handful of people on this message board. Most of the other  nicknames you brought up come from the players themselves, or the team. They're used by most of the media covering the team, too.

Also, it's terrible.
I only created it because I couldn't spell his real name, my spell check now has it so no more Lilypad or Launching Pad or Creature from the Black Lagoon from me.

Thanks for dictating the rules of the game...for one I love Baby Talk, especially when warrented.

Didn't you know that this is now the official silly general discussion forum with only Nik names and other silly things? :o

You know which nickname I never understood? Jonas Gustavsson aka "The Monster". No alliteration. He wasn't inhuman...It's the same amount of syllables as his surname...And he wasn't exactly great at stopping pucks. Hate it.

Oh and here's a trick for Timmy's name: Use "lil" then add the "jegren". Lilypad is horrible and you should feel horrible for using it!!

Sorry I don't feel horrible and I will never let anyone make me feel horrible, except if I am in agreement of the horribleness of it.  Sorry just found out me old mom is on her way out and a bit frigged out today.  :'(

I think that was a case of it being his actual nickname that other players used as opposed to one cooked up by media or fans. In which case it could come from anywhere. He shows up to one goaltending camp and is the tallest guy there and bam, people start calling him Monster.

Very sorry to hear that...my condolences.
Thanks Hobbes, she is 97 and was out of it the last few years. When you think the passing will be a relief, it is not. You only get one Mom.

Condolences buddy. I've lost both of my parents and I can empathize how difficult it is.
